I've been reading many of the threads posted on this forum and have gone to Excelsior's site and have decided that this is the route for me! My mother went through Excelsior back when it was called Regents College. She encouraged me to look into it since going the traditional route is out of the question for me right now. I feel that this is a good fit for me, since I already study quite a bit independently for LPN school. I am graduating from LPN school in June and will start with EC as soon as I can. I know that I don't have any experience yet and that some view that as a negative, but I have just made up my mind that I will be extra diligent, work hard, pay attention and LEARN come heck or high water. :lol2: I also plan to work on a Med/Surg floor as an LPN, so I hope that will be useful to me in the pursuit of my dreams. I do have concerns, of course, that my lack of experience may be a negative, but I think that as long as I am as prepared as any other new RN grad, I'll be ok. I'm getting excited! I didn't think getting my RN was within my reach any time soon! And now it is!

great decision! it worked wonderfully for me.

i feel it's a huge advantage if you work med surge as an lpn, in that you won't have to do that after you get your rn license. you can hop into another area if you're so inclined. another good decision :)

Just a word of advice for your big decision!

after 5 years off and on, working part, per diem and then full time on med surg floors, raising 3 children and moving 2000 miles overseas, i am proud to say that i'm 2 courses, the CPNE, and the NCLEX away from my rn! if i can do it with those challenges, anyone can. find super study buddies/support system via the internet (they are there!). They will be your source of inspiration when you're at your low point. (there will be those times too). best of luck! :roll

First I would like to say hello...I'm new to allnurses :saint: Okay I received my letter from the nursing program I applied to and I was not excepted....so now I'm looking into excelsior...I have sooooo many questions and would love for someone to give me some direction! I graduated from LVN school in August of 2005 and I am looking to obtain my ADN. I have read quite a few post on here about excelsior and so far I have not read anything that seems to negative...so if anyone can help me answer my question I would gladly appreciate it!!!

1. What is the criteria for admission

2. When can you start the program

***I have read that you have to take I think it was 7 classes and take the exam for each of those...

3. But how are clinicals done and where do you do your clinicals

4. I also read a post about a CPNE (sorry if thats not right) but what exactly is this...and where do you take this

5. If I live in the state of Texas can I take boards here

6. Typically how long does the program take

7. Are there any negative aspects at all that anyone has heard of....

Okay ya'll I'm sorry there are a lot of questions...but if anyone could help again I would gladly appreciate it!!!! :coollook:

Congrats on your decision to forge ahead. Any experience you can gain as an LPN will help you when it comes to the CPNE. It isn't easy, but Excelsior does open up a lot of opportunities for people who can be self-motivated.

Hey Jenny, yes, Texas does allow you to sit for the boards after graduating from Excelsior. In fact, I didn't even know that Excelsior existed until I found it specifically mentioned on the Texas Board of Nursing website. They don't accept any other distance learning schools for your ADN other than Excelsior. I live in Texas as well and was so grateful to find something like EC!

i'm glad i did the lpn to rn through excelsior. you can go to school and have a life. ALL nursing schools are h e l l. if you find one that is easy let us all know. the state where i live it is hard to get into nursing school and hard to grad. my friend who dropped out of an lpn to rn prog said they started with 50 and only 15 graduated.
