RN to BSN with a restricted RN license

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hi everyone,

I am reaching out to anyone who may have some experience or perhaps answers to a special question I have. I am currently an RN with ADN, and looking forward to advancing my education with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing. However, my big obstacle here is that I have a restricted RN license and am currently on probation with the Oregon Board of Nursing. I have certain restrictions, such as I cannot pass narcotics and I need to have a supervisor on site. This is due to medication diversion, and long story short, I have been in recovery for 15 months, and look forward to using my experiences to serve others in a similar situation in a nursing capacity. Returning to school to work towards my Psych NP is my goal, thus making school my means. So far, all my research has been a dead end due to my restricted RN licensure status.

Does anyone know of any online programs for RN to BSN that will accept a student with a restricted license such as myself? Thank you for any feedback!

Sincerely, HenryBood RN

I can't really answer your question, but why don't you call the school/programs that has the Psych NP, and find out their requirements and regulations..

Thank You Bronze 2 for your response. Yes, I have looked into the programs, starting with RN to BSN since that is my current station, and they have all required an unrestricted license thus far. Was hoping someone knew of one that didn't, because I have not found that program to yet exist. Yes, still looking for an RN to BSN program that will accept a living and learning person like myself who has a restricted RN license.

I do not know of a program that doesn't require an unrestricted license.

Did they criminally charge you as well?

Hi Esme12-

Thanks for your response. I, too, have come to the same conclusion. No nursing education prospects for me, unfortunately, which ties in well with the limited job prospects. Of course, admittedly, all my doing and no one else's. Just frustrated. Fortunately, however, I do not have any criminal charges against me.

Oh, Esme12- I had originally posted this thread in the College section but I think it was moved to the criminally charged nurse section by the moderators(?) I would imagine.. again thanks for your response.

I too am in Oregon involved in the same program under the same circumstances. I also diverted and have no criminal charges. It appears hard enough to get employed with just a ASN vs BSN in Oregon and with the added situation I put myself in I am feeling like giving up.

I was wondering if you had any luck in the Job Search?

Does anyone know if getting into Resp Therapy school has the same stipulation of an unrestricted license?

Thanks for any help.

Pacific College University in Costa Mesa CA will take you for an RN-BSN online program. They figure if it's good enough for the board why shouldn't they accept you. You can also try to appeal to admission at the school of your choice you never know.

I am an RN in ohio with restrictions and am in the same boat. I have a great job working as an RN but would like to get my BSN and no one will admit me..I have even petitioned the admissions director. I have been out of my consent agreement for years but because of the 3 permanent practice restrictions i cant get my BSN. Ive spoken to the president of my board who unfortunately offers no hope for us!

Hi Matt987,

I just saw your comment since I have not logged in in quite awhile.

So, still here, still restricted. Still no luck in either the job front nor school. Just hoping for a break somewhere. How are you?

Thank you for your input! Very helpful!
