Ohio boards and past DUI

by smc09

Hello everyone! I am currently just starting my senior year of a bachelors program. By the time I send in my application to take my boards it will have been 2 years since my DUI. It was a misdemeanor, and I attended a 3 day christian class on drinking and driving. I have been in no other trouble. I have heard everyone say it will be alright. However I was just wondering if anyone has any thoughts or past experiences of people they may know! I am so excited to be a nurse in less than a year, and am horrified I won't beable to sit for my boards!!!

Thanks

Moved to the nursing with criminal history forum

Questions we seem to be encountering more and more often have to do with the effects of a criminal history on nursing licensure:

Is it possible to become licensed as a nurse if you have a criminal history?
Is it possible to become licensed as a nurse if you have a MIP, DUI, or other related charges?
What happens if you are charged or convicted of a crime after licensure?
Can I go to nursing school and/or be licensed if my record has been sealed or expunged?
Will I be able to go to nursing school with a criminal record?
What can happen if I receive a MIP/DUI/DWI or other charge while still in school?

These are questions that the members of allnurses.com cannot answer. The only reliable source of information is your State Board of Nursing. Each case is dealt with on an individual basis.

I can tell you that the moderators will do 2 things....
1 - move this thread to "legal" forum and
2 - tell you that we can't give you any legal advice.

I wish we could tell you more....each state has its own BON and each one looks at each case uniquely. Usually, the time since offense and what you have done since will go a long way.

Good luck to you!

Go to your state's boards web-site and read every inch of it and get all of the information you can. It is better to be prepared before you apply for a license than get blind sided with all kind of problems that hinder yor license application/boards. It is your career/future so do all that you can do ahead of time. Maybe you can call them and ask them about specifics.

Good luck!

I totally understand your concern..I am currently waiting for the Oklahoma Board of Nursing to approve my application to test. I graduated Sept 29th and am waiting to take the state boards but the OBN states my prior arrest record has to be cleared before I can test. I got a DUI in '95, which is almost 15 years ago. I was young and very irresponsible at that time. I am now married with children and would never even consider getting behind the wheel of a car if under the influence. I don't even drink! Anyway, I am stressing DAILY now waiting to hear a response. All of my classmates are getting their ATT's and I'm still waiting on a resonse from the board! VERY STRESSFUL!
