Class B misdemeanor

Nurses Criminal

Published

Hi, I was arrested when I was 18 for a class B misdemeanor theft charge. I am currently on probation and Im almost about to successfully finish. I have finished taking my hesi A2 and made an 88% on it. My gpa stands above a 3.0. I am finished with all my nursing prerequisites and applied to UTMB nursing. I had to put on the application that I had been arrested for theft. I was wondering if anyone knows whether my application will be disqualified from the applicants. I would like to explain myself, if possible, to the committee if I could get a chance. The time that it happened, my father was in a post surgery coma for four months and we were not doing financially well. I did not like to ask my mother for money and didnt have a job at the time. I made a stupid mistake and got caught for it. I only wish I could take back what I did because it has tremendously effected my life and I have been paying for it for so long now. It is devastating that this could potentially ruin my dreams of becoming a nurse. If anyone has any information on what I could do at this point I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you.

Since it is not a felony, it wont ruin your dreams of being a nurse, it could however delay them. You will need to as the nursing advisor at your school because the background check standards are dictated by the clinical sites. The school cannot let you in to the nursing program if something on your record will exclude you from participating in clinical, and I have not heard of any school giving a hearing to hear our side of the story for why you have a charge. This charge does not make you a bad person if it was a one time thing, but the clinical sites have licenses and state regulations to follow, so no matter the situation, they have to abide by those regulations. Depending on how long ago it was, you may be fine. Most misdemeanors only disqualify your for 3,5,or 7 years depending on the crime and the regulations for the state. So if your charge was within the disqualifyng time frame, you may just have to wait a little longer. Just give them a call so you can get an answer. If you dont qualify now, then work for a few years, and apply when your misdemeanor will no longer count against you.
