Vanderbilt Nurse Residency Winter 2018

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

Hello!

I am graduating in December and I have the summer off so I've begun looking at potential places that I'd like to work.

I'm thinking I'd like to do a nurse residency because I want to work in a pediatric Critical Care setting (PICU or Peds ER) and I feel like having that whole year with someone helping me and that I can ask questions without feeling like an annoying dummy.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone here was looking at Vanderbilt's Nurse Residency for February 2018? I'm not from Nashville, but I'm also not too far away as I'm from North Alabama. I'd appreciate any tips about the residency or about Nashville!

Thanks

what are the chances I'll get the job off the waitlist? Is it kind of just a nice method of rejection or do I still have hope?

Has anyone heard anything from the Burn unit?

I also got waitlisted. It is possible for people to move up on the waitlist I would assume. It's not a flat out no, nor is it a counteroffer for a completely different unit. I just can't imagine waiting until January and potentially still not knowing.

Looking at past year's threads, some people have gotten pulled up from the waitlist, and some people in past threads say they got a definite no (were not put on the waitlist, just told no). So I would say there's still hope.

Has anyone heard anything about a timeline for when the Facebook page will be created? I was told "in October" during my interview. I'm starting in November and am kind of getting slightly antsy about where I'm going to live and whether or not I will get a roommate. If I do wind up with a roommate, I'd prefer it be with someone who is also in the residency program.

Have you started looking at different places in Nashville? Same here -antsy about not knowing and the wait for everything to start picking up.

I'm antsy already and I don't start til February. I wish I could do SOMETHING with my nursing skills until I start there. I know I don't graduate until December, but next weekend is my last shift precepting and then I'll just be doing my tech job and have like 5 more clinical days for Community. I really wish I could do something more. I'm thinking I'll start asking to shadow nurses after graduation (my hospital offers that) and picking up shifts on the cardiac floors as a tech/sitter just to get familiar with diagnoses and medications. Oh and study for NCLEX.

I've started looking online right now. I'm going up there next week and sitting down with an apartment locator and will hopefully find my apartment then. Unless we get added to the "Facebook group" that is apparently happening and then I'm just going to look at different apartments and not make a full decision. I'm thinking I want to have roommates, simply because I don't want to pay tons for rent, plus utilities.

Have you looked at places yet or know what you're plan is for that?

Hey guys, random question. I'm thinking of getting licensed here in Alabama as soon as I can after graduation and then applying for endorsement through TN BON. I was wondering if anyone has any idea of the timeline for endorsement. I know AL is pretty quick when it comes to licensing and a friend of mine took her NCLEX within a month and I'll be happy to take it ASAP after graduation.

I got licensed in GA first and am now having to be endorsed by TN. It takes 6-8 weeks for the endorsement to be processed. You might as well go ahead and get licensed in TN if you are for sure going to work in Tennessee. It will definitely save you lots of time and lots of money.

Keep in mind if your state is in the Compact Licensure, you have to take the NCLEX in the state you are a resident of. Even though we have jobs lined up in TN, since I am not a resident yet of TN, I have to take it in MO and then get it transferred.

The NCLEX is a national test so it does not matter what state you take it in. You can also apply to any state board of nursing. Just contact that board of nursing first to make sure what their procedure/policy is.
