Failed the ANCC NI Certification... Now What?

Greetings,

I took the ANCC Certification today. OHHHHHHHH So close!

I failed (337.. needed minimum of a 350). I don't want to discuss the specifics of the test, because I am not supposed to!

I recently returned 2 weeks ago from Iraq, so honestly I could have studied more for this exam. I thought it was rather hard.

My 2 study supplies were the

1. ANCC Informatics Nurse Online Narrated Review Course

This course contains the same content as our popular Review Seminars, with the voice over of an instructor talking the student through the material. CNE contact hours included.

2. Informatics Nurse Exam Secrets - Mometrix Media

I chiefly used #1. I felt like it was a decent review, but didn't expand on some areas that I needed for the test. I listened to all 10 modules, but honestly a huge chunk of my questions were not covered in that review course.

What else would you recommend that I purchase to study?

Since I am so close, I plan on retaking the test within 90 days. I am just going to hit the books hard and improve the score.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Hey, Chris;

Just wanted to say thank you for your military service. I appreciate you more than words can say.

Best wishes on your next go-round with the certification test.

Thanks! I wouldn't wish for another career!

This is my gameplan for next time

1. Attend the ANCC Nurse Study Group

http://www.cvent.com/events/informatics-nurse-study-group/event-summary-32c1b1a8f8404f2bab01acb6de1c6bd3.aspx

Since I failed the ANCC exam, I get this for free.

It starts on May 3rd and ends on June 21st.

2. Continue with the ANCC Study Course. There is lots there that I didn't memorize. I have access to this for the next 30 days (May 14th)

3. I registered for the pearlsreview.com website to get contact hours and their info for the Nurse Informatics Certifications. I looked over the info. I am not too impressed.

There is some stuff on there that I can use.

4. Possibly get help from Anglea over the phone once I have cemented a good base.

Then .. 2nd to 3rd week in June I will retest.

That is the plan..

Sounds like a plan. I'm traveling today, I want to check at home and look at some of my foundational NI texts. I can give you a few good references for the system life cycle and the management/leadership sections too. I can scan in pages and e-mail you content.

Will post/send something tomorrow or Saturday.

Angela,

I just bought this

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0135043948/

Handbook of Informatics for Nurses and Healthcare Professionals (4th Edition) [Paperback]

I used the digital version for a class. I plan on using this as well.

Is that by Hebda, Czar and Mascara? Yes thats okay.... but we may have overlooked another very easily accessible and obvious source. the Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice by the ANA has an exstensive reference list at the back. When I took the exam some 11 years ago they gave/included a copy of the Scope and Standards when you registered for the exam....but maybe not anymore? If not you should be able to purchase a copy on-line from ANA's book store??

Also Linda Thede - Informatics and Nursing Opportunities and Challenges does an excellent job with System Life Cycle. Also try to get your hands on a copy of Esssentials of Nursing Informtics by Saba and McCormick and or Nursing Informatics and the foundation of knowledge by McGonigle and Mastrian two excellent sources.

For the leadership and management sections I'm going to suggest you use a reference from IOM - Leadership by Example from the Quality Chasm Series.

Again Good Luck and let me know if you need anything else.

Angela,

Thanks for the tip.

I just ordered "Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics Practice by the ANA (2008)" from Amazon. ANCC did not provide me with a copy upon registration. I looked at a electronic copy online and I am glad that I ordered it. There is a bunch of information that I could have used for the exam.

I think the Heba and Czar book, the ANA book, The 2 ANCC courses and the Pearls review course are enough for me for the time being.

I have tomorrow off and I plan on studying the whole day!

Thanks for all the advice!

Chris when you have a chance, please do me a favor and post to the "Your input is needed" See at the top of the NI Forum?

Our convo makes me think I need to maybe write a blog post on: "Preparing To Take the NI Cert Exam?" but please I'd appreciate any topic suggestions you may have, Thanks!

I just wanted to tell everyone that I retook the exam on June 20th and passed!

Despite failing the first time, I didn't think the exam was that hard. The ANCC Study group was very beneficial and truly represented a good portion of the test.

I would recommend it over anything out there.

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement.

Congratulations!! Glad to see the ANCC Study group was helpful. I took that course and hoping it pays off. :D

Thanks.. to clarify the course that I recommend is

Informatics Nursing Study Group

Speakers: Marisa L. Wilson DNSc, MHSc, RN-BC

Not the ANCC Seminar offered by Miriam Halimi!

The study group should give you 80 percent of the test. The rest you already know from work experience.

Congratulations! I just got back from taking the exam and unfortunately for me, I didn't pass as I scored 340. Like you, I used the 10 modules narrative review. I feel that the narrative review did not cover most of the questions in the exam. The review included a great deal of informative and valuable information but did not necessarily and directly reflect relevancy in the exam. I'm pretty bummed about not passing and still trying to shrug it off. My next step is to join the ANCC study group in September and retake the exam in November.
