Calling All Newbies!

As a newly hired informatics nurse, I've been perusing the website and reading similar stories about graduate programs, job searching, learning the role, etc. I'd like to start a network of new informatics nurses (either in school, or in the field for less than a year or two). It seems like we are all going through nearly the same process, just at slightly different points in time.

If you are interested, please reply here. I cannot send anyone a private message yet (I have to create 15 Quality Topics before I have the ability to do that), but I'm sure we can figure out a way to connect.

Thanks!!

I'm new =)

I am SUPER new, as in last week!!!

Specializes in Hospice, Nursing Education, Primary Care.

I am an nursing instructor and I would be interested in knowing what things used in practice would be good for people to know in NI. I have a background in software development before becoming a nurse. This is a link to a delphi study in 2002 (which may no longer be relevant) but I found it helpful in a graduate course in 2010 so it may be relevant today as well. http://fpb.case.edu/nurseweb/docs/NI_Competencies.pdf

I'm currently in school for IT so I can get a job in informatics. I'm very interested.

Specializes in "Wound care - geriatric care.

I'm a new RN with only a few months experience but I'm very interested in IT. At this point I want to know what are the working (job) options out there. I do have background in computers as well

I used to keep watch for informatics and it used to be all the rage at the very beginning of EMR assimilation. Everybody wanted several experienced RNs with dual IT background to translate and hold the hands, or give a "time-outs" - especially to the MDs who refused to learn.

Now, I almost never see job postings asking for an RN component. Here is what I am thinking is going on. There was a big adjustment to be made between the geeks and the hospital staff and so nurses were heavily recruited for on-boarding time. But now, some of these EMR companies have adjusted too, and since EMR has jumped a few hurdles over the most recent few years, the yelping for an interpreter nurse (LOL), is not as much needed as before. Hospitals have developed self-teach training modules along with EMR Co.s. And lots of big hospital networks that are fully integrated now, just look for heavy network build and design people to tailor stuff to their needs and fix problems. The nurse part really isn't as essential as it once was.

And everybody knows that it is those without any medical experience or education who determine what the staff needs to be charting, etc. and what to do with that information.

I'm new and will soon be taking an IT degree.. hand 4months experience in hospital.. I'm interested in what your going at let's help each other

I would love to be a part of a network of new informatics nurses. I am a recent grad with an MSN in informatics. I am lost in the job search because all the listings want years of experience. I have one year of bedside experience and only a college internship that was somewhat related to informatics.

I am an extremely new informatics nurse! I start my new job on Monday (Super Excited)! I also finish my MSN in informatics this summer. I would love to be a part of the network!

What would you advice me? I'm a BSN grad and registered nurse here in the philippines had 4months hospital experience.. Then i havent found a permanent job since its hard to look due to the oversupply of nurses here. As of now 300,000 nurses are unemployed sad fact in our country. I am planning to enter informatics and i dont know where to start, the options i have are plan A take a 2 year degree in information technology and get a job affiliated to that course or Plan B look for any nursing job.. I'm so lost but i know that the bedside is not for me.. And I've really wanted to pursue informatics in the first place but due to the demand that a nursing degree would lead to green pasture my parents forced me to take it..:)

Specializes in Cardiocvascular.
