CRNE exam is around the corner! Please share your questions and knowledge, and anything you come across during your preparation and think it's good to know for the exam. Our fellow RNs and future coworkers! we need your expertise and input here. And those of you who wrote the exam already are more than welcome to contibute to this thread too.

Hi Nice earyen,

Are you in Canada? I am here in Calgary. I have a copy of the CRNE Prep Guide 5th ed. and I love it! I would offer to lend you my copy but chances are you are far away from where I am right now. It is quite expensive to order it straight from Ottawa. I purchased my copy from a university here in Calgary and I did not have to pay for shipping fees & HST (just Alberta`s GST).

Hi there! so nice of you to do that, I am just wondering it the contents are the same with the 4th edition except for the short questions, or they have a totally different line ups of questions? I mean the way questions are constructed...

I am not in Canada yet, still working on it.

I'll try to find a copy of the 4th ed (would be good to review, too).. I agree with Akardan, if you have the 4th ed., you should be fine.. same goes for me, I'll be fine with my 5th ed. I think the contents of our prep guides could be similar. The important thing is that we understand the rationales behind the correct & incorrect answers. =)

Hey folks,

also studying for the CRNE and I have a question. (I've been studying the guide/self study from CNA as well as the lippincott CRNE study guide I bought)

Where can I find out information about patient confidentiality/ HIV/AIDS confidentiality rules in Canada? As some of you know I'm American (Canadian PR moving there this summer) and I worked and went to school here in the USA.

I've been googling and reading some of the HIV advocacy groups information but I'm concerned there may be a lot of questions about this on the CRNE. Clinical topics I'm ok with, it's the different rules/regulations I'm less familiar with.

In the US we have HIPPA (federal laws that regulate who gets what patient information) and a very strigent system of confidentiality surrounding HIV disclosure etc. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

In regards to rule/regulations you should check out CNO Compendium. (college of nurses of ontario) this is what we are told to study, you can download the compendium and it has sections. For example, confidentiality/practice guidelines etc...

yes Mosby's comprehensive book is useful but very detailed and hard to study from (in my opinion). CNA prepguide is the most useful in order to prepare for the exam.

im having my CRNE on June 2nd, I read 2/3 Mobsy im on page 440 and i did all the questions in the Mobsy though. I did CNA prep guide and online readyness test. I also bought the Mobsy prep guide and one published from Toronto. Basically whatever is availabe in book store I bought them. Now im on page 440 and i seriously want to puke. However, Mobsy my answers is strickly around 65% and im feel mobsy is way harder than CNA questions. But CNA questions are very tricky which means it always tick you between 2 correct answers, which means you might be so close to the correct answer but you just wasnt lucky enough to pick it.

when i did online readyness test yesterday i got a 65% again!!!!!!!! it seems like im very strickly sticking with a C level lol!!!!!! but im not C level at school lol!!!!!!

so my plan is to redo all my questions, CNA, Mobsy, Mobsy prep guide, the one published the Toronto, then each questions i write it down what it is asking for, for example, Chest Tube, insulin, total hip replacement. I noticed there is a general rule of all the questions. For example, there are so many questions you always follow this rule: validate client's feeling first then explore or explain. You always always have to validate their feeling and usually 3 of them doesnt validate their feelings hahhaha.

Then im planning to soak myself into all the questions for these days and really review what i dont really know. For example, my PEDs sucked cuz i havent remeber all the developmental stages. I felt i have to know it because a lot of peads questions requires my critical thinking and judgement based on if you always have a knowing in the developmental stage. I noticed CNA always have questions seeking for answers: remaining with the client. Grief, death, someone who is unstable in emerge. I found the CNA prep guide and online test there is always 2-5 questions i really disagree with the answer, but other answers i really agree.

honestly i felt: dude, you need some skills to get a 70. 70 for this exam is not easy!

Im aiming for 75 which means i need to increase 10% in 6 days. How to improve 10% in 6 days? i felt only by doing questions and know what they ask for. And i definately will review all the topics appeared in exam again. For example, like I already know renal failure and im weak on Cushing and addison's syndrome because they are confusing. I will go back to renal failure rather than cushing and addison because the chance of renal failure on CRNE is greater than cushing.

most ppl who felt they dont know how they did, either pass or fail, they pass!

from faq - the canadian registered nurse examination (crne)

  • what's a passing mark on the crne? the standard passing score ranges from 59-68%. but the standard passing score is determined by the level of difficulty of the exam as established by the crne examination committee. each exam is set by the committee using a pool of thousands of stock questions created by nursing educators across the country. the pool of questions is constantly changing, as is the composition of the exam. no two exams are ever more than superficially similar. the actual mark achieved only matters as it compares to the standard set for that specific exam. results are reported to the candidate as either "pass" or "fail". occasionally the cna will provide a score to the failing candidate in an effort to assist with succeeding on subsequent attempts but generally speaking you will not receive a score.

be sure you read the questions very carefully to ensure you know what they are asking. don't "read into" the questions... if the information isn't there on the paper, it doesn't influence the answer. you might want to underline key words in the question so you can focus your efforts on responses that will best apply. if a response seems obvious, go with it. and don't change your answers once you've selected them because the odds of changing a correct answer into an incorrect one are much higher than the reverse. good luck everyone!

From what I understand the questions in the Mosby book are very hard, and the actual test is not that difficult. The CNA prep guide gives you a much better idea of how the questions are worded and presented on the CRNE. I wouldn't worry that you'd only get 65% based on Mosby's.. it is my understanding that the test questions are not like the ones in that book.
