NP Programs In Canada

Hi everyone,

I'm interested in becoming an NP in Canada. In my province there are only adult population focus programs (I'm in Alberta.) However, I want to specialize in paediatrics. I know that Ontario has a paediatric population focus program, but I don't really want to move for two years just to complete this degree. I'm not too sure if anybody knows about Athabasca and their NP program, and I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice to give?

I currently work in adult acute health care, which I enjoy but not as much as paediatrics. Also, if I were to become an NP in Alberta, what are the job prospects like?

I know several nurses from Alberta who became pediatric NPs IN Alberta, so I'm not sure why you think you'd have to leave the province. Three of them are pediatric cardiology NPs, one is with the pediatric stroke program, another is with peds neurosurgery, one has her position within the gastroenterology department, another is the NP for pediatric pulmonary hypertension patients and yet another works with children with long-term tracheostomies. Oh and then there's the one with the peds oncology program, and the one with the thrombosis program... But I don't know anyone who does primary care pediatrics. Is that what you're talking about?

Can you tell me where they completed their NP degrees? I have looked at both UofA and UofC and neither of those schools offer a paediatric focus.

Most of them attended U of A.
