How/when to start the whole job application process

Hello,

I live in Canada (ON) and am just finishing up my RPN (LPN) program. I finish my studies in April 2017, then I have my 10 week consolidation from May 10- July 17 with the possibility of finishing sooner (possibly end of June, beginning of July). My question is, when do I start applying for jobs? All the other posts I see just state a graduation date without any mention of a placement afterwards. I've been looking into the NNG program. This is something to apply to a few months before I finish my final consolidation placement yes? I wouldn't be taking my registration exam until September 2017.

Any help or insight is appreciated!

thanks!

Is the job market in your area saturated with more applicants than jobs? or is there a shortage? If you live in close proximity to a city, it is most likely the job market has a surplus of applicants.

Do you have an exceptional resume with either volunteer or related work experience?

Do you have a reference who can recommend you to a nursing manager?

If you do not have an exceptional resume or a reference, apply after you are licensed.

The Ontario government should remove the word 'guarantee' from the new grad guarantee initiative, as too many nursing students are misled by the term and believe they are guaranteed a job after graduation.

Curious what school do you go to? I went to Mohawk only got 7 weeks consolidation. We finished in April, wrote CPRNE in May, licensed by the CNO in August.

Start applying ASAP. Most people got jobs within a few months but it took me and a couple of my friends 7 months to find work. Start applying for things before you've graduated, and try to schmooze with the management at your consolidation, sometimes they will arrange to open a NGG position just for you when you graduate. I'm not sure if you can start applying for NGGs before you've graduated, but you can apply for regular jobs.. I am doing NGG right now, it's awesome.

edit: I graduated April 2016

With both my RPN and RN programs I was offered jobs before I even graduated. I did this by finding out managers names and emailing them as well as dropping by their offices to hand out resumes. I got shut down a lot more than not, but it landed me my dream job in both instances. Start applying I would say a month before you finish the program. Try to get in where your consolidation was - that's the easiest. Good luck!
