You know you're a nurse if...

You've been telling stories in a restaurant and had someone at another table throw up.

I think I jinxed myself.

Dexter, the hyper-with-neurotic-issues-rescued dog in question, tested positive for heartworm (probably acquired in his original home state of Mississippi and brought up here to Michigan). So now we've got him on a twice-a-day antibiotic to (hopefully) weaken the adults, in addition to his once-a-month preventative.

I'm working 3-4 nocs (12-hr) in a row and can't tell what day it is at any given moment, so I just printed up a MAR for Dexy. :(

I just wanted to make it clear that I'm liking the MAR, not Dexter being sick. Hope he feels better soon.

They weren't hiding well enough. The best of the best know where all of the hiding spots are. I actually had a CNA approach me and ask for some advice with respect to that as they didn't have keys to access all of the fun places.

NOADLS,

I can't decide if you are being facetious or just so burnt out that you need a very long vacation.

You rub olive oil onto your chronically itching cat's skin, and the sores he created from itching heal up after a few days, and he's back to normal including playing.

Ohh! My heart just melted. What a cutie!

Thanks for all the positive comments on my pup, Dexter. He really is as sweet as he looks, in spite of the hard life he endured prior to joining our family.

Fortunately, his heartworm seems to be rather limited -- we think he only has maybe a couple adult worms. The lab didn't detect any microfilaria in his blood, so it's possible that he only has same-sex adults (or possibly only one adult), so they aren't reproducing. We did have him on a preventive at the end of last summer and into the fall (until the first hard freeze), so that could have prevented the growth of other larvae that might have been in his system at that time.

He has (knock wood) zero clinical symptoms of heartworm, another sign that he has a very small adult worm load. He has no cough, no unusual heart sounds, and absolutely no activity intolerance (quite the opposite -- even on Prozac, he's still a hyper little mutt!).

Hopefully a year from now he'll test negative and this will all be behind us!

I'm so glad to hear that the news is so great for Dexter! As the mama to several cats who have had problems, I can emphasize with what you've been going through. It's hard to have a sick furbaby.

check out garlic as an additional tx.

Garlic is poisonous to dogs and cats, so no garlic.

Not a nurse yet, but in nursing school. We've been talking about edema a lot lately, and last night I dreamt that I had peripheral edema. My ankles were HUGE (and for some reason, my legs were necrotic). I remember thinking "I hope this is a dream!" Thank goodness it was.

Most of my embarrassing nurse moments happen when I'm out in public.

- When you're in the freezer section of the convenience or grocery store and you knock on the glass before opening it. If you're lucky, there's always someone looking t you funny, too.

- When you pause 'with a start' after hearing the loud crack before the announcement over the PA system. At work, loud alarms = elopement: Everyone stops, looks at the panel, hollars the zone and start running!

- If you attempt to transfer-assist strangers in public. When I see an elder trying to ambulate with a walker and having a difficult time, I can't NOT 'spot' them. They probably think I'm the weirdest person ever.

- When TMI discussions with strangers reach the checkout counter. I once had a 12 second discussion about douching with a cashier. I don't remember how it happened but this is Reason #36 for why I don't wear my scrubs or nurse badge in public.

- When you're not afraid to probe a friend/family member/loved one about their healthcare issues. A cousin of mine actually thinks it's so weird that I asked him the color of his poo. He claims that he doesn't look at it. How do you not look at it?

or your thing to yourself, Please keep breathing until I get off.

When you have a dream about a person you really don't like being admitted under your care with a stage 3 on her rear... Yeah that was when I was in school dreaming of becoming a wound nurse after I get my RN.. Tehehe
