Nurses Humor

Published

I don't know how many of you guys watch those medical shows like Greys anatomy, private practice, house, nurse jackie etc.

I have a hard time watching them because of all the False and un-researched stuff that occurs on the shows. If they want these shows to sound legit, they need to do more research on them!

Couple examples:

(Dont remember what show exactly) But doctor gave the patient a glascow coma scale of 3, but yet the patient was responding to voice and answering yes/no questions by blinking eyes....hmm???

Greys Anatomy: Dr. Grey was listening to a patient who had SOB, and she listens, but her stethoscope is not in correctly....Highly doubt you hear crackles in the lung fields Dr. Grey.

any others any one notices??

I watch Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, and any other medical related show that appears on the channels I get which aren't many since I have only the very basic of basic cable channels Comcast offers.

I think it was last week's Grey's Anatomy when Callie was in that ejected MVC. She was in the trauma bay and it was FUUUUULLLLLLL of people...all docs! Not one nurse, RT, CNA in sight!

Later, in the ICU, one of the residents is freaking out b/c she is still in "SVT" (looked pretty much like ST to me but what do I know?) even though, "I've given her adenosine and diltiazem and she's still in SVT." I'm so sure that doc took the time to draw up meds and administer them. Our docs don't even know what to do with a beeping IV pump....and I kinda prefer it that way! We had a resident that had a bad habit of being in a room when a kid's IV pump would beep infusion complete and he would just turn it off and conveniently forget to tell anyone. Next thing you know, the poor kid's IV has clotted off and we have to place a new one.

I like house because some of the diagnosis and medicine behind their stories are true and interesting. I will say that nurses are not portrayed on TV very well at all. The females are belittled or sleepin with the doc's, and the males.....Come to think of it the only male nurse I can ercall on tv is Gaylord Focker! Need I say more!

Oh yeah, I watch House and Bones also.

I like House, Grey's Anatomy, and Bones. I haven't seen the new show "Body of Proof" with Dana Delaney. Did anybody watch the pilot? BTW-Grey's Anatomy-The Musical was very silly last week......

Personally, my favorite med show was Scrubs. I thought it was a fairly accurate interpretation of how we interact at work lol (you can laugh or cry in a hospital...pick 1). However, the MOST accurate medical test I have ever seen portrayed on TV was NOT on a medical show.

On an episode of Walker, Texas Ranger, the one where he gets blown up and is in a coma (that should narrow it down huh?), he is in the ED, the ED doc is assessing him for consciousness and picks up his arm, holds it over his face, and allows the arm to fall, hitting him in the face thus proving he ain't faking it (how many times have we encountered pts who think it is funny to fake unconsciousness? Pick up the arm, drop it and it magically moves enough to miss hitting the nose...)

It just stuck with me.

House is my favorite medical show, but it does make me laugh to see the docs doing just about everything. Of course, if somebody vomits or has a bleed or a code brown, then they call for the nurses. But House is a fascinating character, and the writing is amazing.

Can't stand HawthoRNe. She's just too earnest and indignant for my taste. And she's always on some kind of noble crusade. Too saccharine and sappy.

Never warmed up to Grey's Anatomy. It's such a dang soap opera. Maybe it's grown up over the years but the few times I watched it way back when, I couldn't figure out how they had time for the patients with all the staff drama.

Nurse Jackie is a guilty pleasure. Her behavior--both on the job and at home--is appalling, but it's also hilarious. And who doesn't know people like Mrs. Akalitus and Zoe?

I really miss ER. The show wasn't perfect, but you could see they made a huge effort to get things right. I absolutely loved how Chuny and Haleh and Sam and Malik knew their stuff and often had to 'splain a thing or two to the new med students and residents. They portrayed intelligent, capable people who weren't afraid of the docs. There were no handmaidens on that show. Many times, the nurses were the ones who saved a few behinds (after kicking the ones that needed it). Yup, I really miss ER.

I saw the pilot episode. It's more like a murder mystery so far, and the main character diagnoses the cause of death early on.

I miss ER too Miranda. That was my favorite show bar none. I always thought Scrubs was silly and couldn't get into it. I also like forensics, so am fascinated with NCIS, and CSI NY since they really deal with that.

I'm wondering what you all feel about this review I wrote for a SciFi fan forum:

I've been watching House, and mostly enjoying it, but I'm also rather frustrated with it. ... I didn't realize that diagnosis by itself is a medical specialty. Seems like every doctor should be good at it. But the series keeps telling us House is renowned for being the very best at it! They have to keep telling us that. Because every episode, he and his team routinely MISdiagnose their patient, usually several times over, and keep nearly killing them! If we weren't being constantly told how good he is, just watching him we'd be convinced anew every week that he was a total incompetent, kept around purely for comic relief!
I haven't thought the doctors on the show doing tests and other nursey things was that odd, since the premise is that they're "on fellowships", essentially students all over again to learn from House, plus working with special patients who had been singled out for exceptional care. But there have been a lot of other times I've had to exercise my "willing suspension of disbelief" as much as I do for the sci-fi shows I like.
