New Grad Struggle in BC

Nurses Job Hunt

I am a recent BSN graduate from a small public college in Vancouver, BC. I am fortunate to be the third cohort to come out of this program. As I complete my first month as a licensed RN, I am finding difficulty landing an interview. I sought out advice with my resume, completed continuing education outside my degree, asked my friends who had "connections", applied to nearly all available health authorities (and every job that I was qualified for) and still no luck. From what I've been hearing is that there are more nurses in the greater Vancouver area than there are jobs. Would relocating improve my chances? Another thing that I thought is that my school maybe not as recognizable as UBC or BCIT, which may make job hunting more difficult. Although a great program, but still relatively new. I naively assumed that I'd be ready and working right out of school. I kept my GPA above 3.5 and dedicated so much to leave lasting impressions on faculty, health facilities, etc.. (again I naively assumed that this would secure me a position) I've learned that reality of the situation is not as easy as anticipated. I often feel exhausted, frustrated, and unsure what to do in order to gain employment. What are your experiences like as a new grad? What obstacles did you face and how did you overcome them? What advice could you give a new grad like myself? Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Yes, relocating can definitely improve your chances of getting a job. It may not be ideal, but it gives you experience and it's not forever. Consider casting that wider net and see where it takes you!
