Looking for Pediatric job in Philadelphia

I just passed my boards on April 1st, 2014. I applied to numerous(!!) RN positions from adult care to peds and med-surg to ER to ICU. I applied to PSA home health care too. It has been a month of applying and I have gotten no one return email or phone (only two emails saying that I was not selected for the job position). How long are new grads waiting for jobs? and Does anyone out there working in NICU setting have any input on how to jump start a pediatric career. That has been my dream for 13 years to be a NICU nurse and I can't seem to find my way in anywhere---it all says experience req'd. Please help!!! Thanks everyone!!

Do you have a BSN?

NICU nurses have a notoriously low turnover rate so job openings are often few. Did you try for any residency/internship programs?

Many new grads(especially not BSN) have looked 6-9 months for a first job in a major metropolitan area

justbeachynurse i have my associates right now but I start my BSN classes on May 14-August 13. I completed most of the classes during my nursing classes (the way my school had it set up) I have four classes and will have my BSN by August 13. My resume states that as well. I just found it weird I have gotten no calls or emails.

Most hospitals in the metro area have the luxury to only look at BSN/RN especially if they have Magnet status. There are a lot of nursing schools graduating ASN and BSN nurses in the metro Philly area. CHoP has been known to pay lower wages because they can-- they are a desired employer and nurses are willing to take the lower wage to work there.

Many hospitals won't contact unless they want to interview.

Try expanding your search to non-hospital jobs. Network if you have clinicals for your BSN.

See if the Bayada Home a Health Pediatrics division has a new grad program in your area. The program offers classroom, lab & extended preceptorship. Normally pedi private duty/ home health won't look at nurses with less than a year paid experience (even in LTC)

For a Pedi job, you may be waiting...

CHOP does hire ADNs for their outpatient clinics; it's best to keep applying and tweaking your profile on their website.

St. Chris does hire ADN's; I had a colleague get hired who is a ADN; but it took her about a year to land the position.

Most ADNs I have seen are in LTC; they get their experience and move on to positions, even in Pedi PDN.
