Nurse Educator Certification

Has anyone ever obtained or heard of a Certification as a Nurse Educator. The one I found is a short 3 day course but I was wondering of someone can really obtain a job involving nurse education with that.

Specializes in Nursing Education.

The exam to which you are referring is administered by the National League for Nursing (NLN). You must meet specific criteria to take the exam, such as having a master's or doctoral degree in nursing and 2-4 years full-time employment in a faculty role in academics (depending on whether the degree is "education - based").

So no, you can't "obtain a job involving nurse education with that". You must already have experience in nursing education. Hope this helps. Dawn

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

ANCC (in collaboration with NNSDO) also has a certification in Nursing Professional Development. You can obtain it with a BSN, but need at least 2 years of experience in staff development/education. Workplace-based nurse educators have to have not only clinical expertise, but also working knowledge of employment law, risk management & quality improvement. The entry-level pathway is usually as a unit-based staff educator. Most higher level positions usually require a masters degree these days.

Specializes in OB, NICU, Nursing Education (academic).

Agree. This is not a certification you get to get a job. A Masters Degree in Nursing is required as is at least 2 years full-time educator experience (if your MSN is in Nursing Education); other MSN's (non-education focus) are required to have 4 years full-time teaching experience.

The CNE is no easy exam. The 3 day course is about test preparation, it's not a course in nursing education. You already need a good bit of experience and knowledge of curriculum development, adult learning styles and assessment before attempting this exam. I took the course and studied for about 60 days before I took it.

Specializes in Cardiac care/Ortho/LTC/Education/Psych.

I got the certification last year.it was tough and expensive.I saw that they are offering now pilot test for only 200 dollars. Maybe they changed some of prerequirments, who knows?
