do any of you ever let your students out early in class or clinical?

Does anybody ever let students go early in class or clinical? I try not to but every once in a great while I do.

Sometimes I do towards the end of the semester once they have completed any skills that is necessary for this level. However, since we have had a Hurricane, no more early days. Need to remain in clinical longer since we have information to review to make up for missed days. Thanks IKE:typing

My clinical starts at 4 PM and ends at 10 PM. I have some students doing 2200 medications. And since it is their first time in the hospital setting and giving medications it takes awhile. But for those that are not giving the 2200 medications. We do our post clinical and they can leave around 9:45PM, but for the most part I try to have them learn as much as they can. Review charts, etc. I try to get them to make the most of it while they can.

I get to clinical an hour before the students arrive to set up everything. I've told the students if they wanted to come in when I am there they can (as long as I am there, they cannot be their without an instructor). I don't let them go work on their assignment, but they can get ready for it by printing out the H&P, Kardex, and see what medications, tx's they have so they can start making the med cards. I've even stayed an hour late for a few students so they could see a foley insertion. Once they are checked off in lab then they will be able to insert one themselves.

It is never my intention to make the students stay beyond the time scheduled, and I have no problem leaving early if everyone is done. I don't believe in forcung them to stay until 2:00 on the dot. The reality is we are hardly ever done early, because there is always one or two students who are not finished. There are days, by the end of the sememster, that I do want to end early, I tell them this, and we still only leave abour 10-15 minutes early.

We had a big issue with students being let out way too early in our school. The instructor attemoted to fail a student b/c of excessive absences, the student outed the instructor, and it was a huge mess. So it seemed to be conventient that they all got out early every week, until someone needed to get themself out of trouble. How unfortunate, huh?

The reason I stayed an hour late was because the students asked me if they could stay and watch it, so stayed for them, not because I wanted to keep them late. I would love to let them out early when they can, be we all know that sometimes everything is not done. So far we got out 15 minutes early one time. We will see. :clown:
