RN with AAS needs to find different line of nursing

Nurses Career Support

Published

I have been an RN for 14 years, 11 of which were on a surgical/pediatric floor (both adults and kids). In those 13 years I sustained 3 back injuries. Eachof which the docs told me were only strains and sprains. Well, now that I finally got them to do an MRI-which lead to a discogram w/CT- I am facing a lumbar fusion this summer. Yikes!:uhoh21: I left floor nursing after my last injury, and have stayed home with my kids for the past three years, while picking up some hours as a school nurse in my children's school district.

So now I would like to see what my employment options are outside of floor/staff nursing(which require so much lifting that I can no longer do).

ANy suggestions anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Office nursing?

Case Management?

Utilization Review?

Telephone triage?

You sound exactly like me. I have also been nurse for 14 years and have endured all types of injuries and just landed a case management position, starting next week. It is a total officejob, computer and phone skills. I suggest something like that, alot of insurance companies and private case anagement companies also provide that. Try calling a nursing placement service or post on monster.com. There are hundreds of lighter Nursing Jobs on monster. Also, if you post headhunters will call you and then you can describe to them what you are looking for. Good luck to you. Keep your spirits up and don't let anyone tell you you need experience. Explain your skills and demonstrate what you can do, not what you can't do.
