Nurses Career Support

Specializes in Trauma.

Hello everyone, I am in need some advice or direction.

After obtaining my nursing license after believing that nursing is not for me, I am finally working as a nurse out of orientation. I like the unit I work on and the people I work with; however, I still have issues working directly with patients and their families. I am an introvert, so active communications with strangers is very draining.

I would like to learn about other careers, both inside and outside of nursing (still in healthcare) that would allow me to work indirectly with patients or maybe management opportunities or something. I work well with a team of people, it is the lack of familiarity I have with the constant flow of patients.

I have heard of health insurance agencies and case managers, so if you have a position like 5hat please tell me what it is like. Thank you for your time.

Most of those positions require years of bedside experience

Im kinda in the same boat. I plan on going to an ICU after my first year. Once you have 1 year of experience a lot of doors open. Check out the ICU, PACU, or OR.

From my experience you have to have at least 1 year inpatient/bedside nursing experience for those positions. The hours are great 8-5 but I honestly miss the direct patient care.

I'm a 10-year veteran nurse and my best advice is to keep moving around until you find a job that you really click with. In my experience, nurses find an "ok" area to work and end up staying there much longer than they wish they had. Be willing to be stretched beyond your comfort zone and keep looking/trying until you find what you LOVE.

You're welcome, Kid! :)

Just wanted to add - please don't feel that introversion is a handicap..... Think-and-process-before-speaking people are very valuable in health care and other industries. I recommend that you read Susan Cain's book "Quiet: The power of introverts in a world that can't stop talking". It's great.
