Newer grad dilemma

Nurses Career Support

Published

I graduated with my BN in May 2012. I was hired into "centralized nursing" or "float pool" at my local hospital. I had to rotate through 5 different units and have 5 different mentors. My first mentor raised questions about my work, so they had a closer eye on me for my further placements which was fine but I seemed to have good reviews from placements 2,3 and 4 but the 5th floor I was placed on also raise questions as to my skills and critical thinking. So I was terminated and my license suspended. My question is I don't know what to do from here. I feel as though a lot of the problems were caused because I was so scared, not assertive and that the other nurses were almost looking and waiting for me to mess up. I don't want to go back to acute nursing due to the politics and fear that this will happen again. Yet because I have such inexperience I'm too nervous to go into long term care or nursing home work because I'm scared I won't be able to make the right judgement as the sole RN on my unit. Any advice of types of work for a nurse who "worked" for 8 months but never made it of orientation?!?!?!

I am kinda confused. You had mistakes, were fired, and you said your license was suspended...how are you looking for a nursing job right now?

Do you have it back? Perhaps explain that the job was not a good fit.

Why was your license suspended?

Specializes in LTC, Agency, HHC.

I don't think the float pool is a good spot for a new grad!! Do you have any previous nursing experience? I realize you graduated in 2010 but already to have a suspended license....are you sure there isn't more to your story?
