Medical Technology or nursing

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hello everyone I'm pretty new to this site but I'm having a hard time deciding on what to study in college. I would love to do medical technology but I've been reading a lot of negative things about the field such as that lab employees feel that nurses and doctors don't respect them at all and never get any kind of recognition...this makes me consider nursing but I don't feel comfortable having to deal with someone else's health and medication, at least not at this point in my life. Have any nurses on here seen other nurses or doctors disrespect lab employees? Or have any nurses here been medical technologists at some point or became one? Sorry for the random question but after speaking to lab employees I would love to hear from nurses themselves, thank you :)

Based on what you've written that I've put in bold, I fail to see why you'd be interested in nursing at all...? That's what we DO! :)

If you seek respect, you should probably keep in mind people tend to get what they give. There are nurses who garner respect, and ones who are treated like dirt. Same as every other job on the planet.

Specializes in Med/Surg, Ortho, ASC.

Totally agree with the PP. You are apparently not in a good place to pursue a career in nursing. It sounds as if you're only considering nursing in order to feel a sense of recognition. Not a recommended motive for any career choice.

Have you looked at ultrasound? My daughter finished ultrasound college about 2 months ago, she is sitting for her registries before really looking for jobs. It has better hours than nursing, and usually works with the patients in a limited capacity. Any of the health related fields have some form of disrespect or lack of opportunities for advancement. It really depends on where you are located and what type of facility you work. Working with the public takes a tolerant attitude, there is always going to be someone who may rub you the wrong way.
