Looking for a change

Nurses Career Support

Published

Hi everyone! Thanks for taking the time to read my post and share your thoughts! I came into nursing at the age of 48 and have worked primarily acute care in the hospital setting. Every year I've had a physical set back or injury. Three years later at the age of 51, I'm having a difficult time with the physical demands of the job.

Im looking for a change but I'm not sure what I'm qualified to do. And I want to only work 3 days a week as I am now. Office work does not appeal to me at all. And since I'm still paying off student loans for my BSN I don't want to go back to school either.

Thanks in in advance for your input!

Heres my experience:

  • RN, BSN, PHN
  • 3 years MedSurg
  • Some Urgent Care exp.
  • Some wound care training
  • A little Home Health exp.

Specializes in retired LTC.

Maybe expand your wound care training and then specialize part-time in LTC, HH?

How's your IV skills? To become skilled for PICC line insertions and then do agency or pharm provider insertion services?

Specializes in ER.

I work ER now. There really isn't a lot of lifting compared to inpatient. You do very few personal care stuff, you know, 400 lb incontinent pts and the like.

When an ambulance comes, the medics get the pt on the ER gurney. A lot of your pts are walkie talkies. It's not hard on the back.
