    I need guidance!!!!

Iíve been out of school for 10 years now. I didnít go to College/University after I graduated because I didnít know what career I wanted to have. I DIDNíT want to spend thousands of dollars going to school and then finding out that I donít like what Iím doing. So, I took my time. Iíve been working in call centre environments ever since then. And now, I HATE IT! I canít stand hearing the phone ring. I cringe. Thatís how bad itís gotten.

Iíve gone to College back in 2001. I tried Chef Training. I thought that I would of really liked it and that I would of excelled. Not so. I hated it. I couldnít stand being around sharp knives and gas and fire. Freaked me out too much. Luckily, I didnít spend too much for that course. I only stayed for 2 months. BadÖI know. BUT, the good thing about it is that I now know that being a Chef isnít something Iíd like to do.

Fast forward till now, 2005. Iím going to be 28 yrs old in August (Not looking forward to 30) and I need a plan. I need a goal in my life. I WILL NOT be behind a computer, listening to people yell and call me names. Nor do I want to hear a phone ringing/beeping every 5 seconds! Iíve had enough of that life.

I need a career change. And I need it now!

This fall Iím going to Seneca College here in Ontario. Iíll be taking a Pre-Health Science course. Iíll be learning Math, Chemistry, Biology and English. Iíve taken all these courses before in high school, except for biology. However, I didnít get good grades in school. I didnít apply myself as well as I should of. So, Iíve decided to redo them all. That way, Iíll be able to get better grades which in return would mean that I would have a better chance of acceptance once I apply for the course of my choice the following year.

Hereís my problem. Iím divided between either becoming a Nurse and take my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree (BScN) [4yrs] or a Veterinary Technician (RVT) [2yrs]. I like BOTH fields. But, I canít make up my mind. The length of the courses doesnít scare me. Iím willing to be in school for as long as it takes if it means that Iíll have a great job afterwards with lots of opportunities. Not to mention a better pay and a better self worth. I like making a difference in peoples lives. I enjoy seeing someone or an animal feel better and smile. Yes, animals do smile. Hahaha

So, my question to you is thisÖ

Which field should I specialize in? RN or RVT?

What about getting your CNA (for humans) and/or whatever it is that they call it for animals? I don't believe either of these courses are that expensive and they would give you a chance to check out the professions without spending alot of money.

I don't know.....alot more stuff to do in nursing, different specialties...if you get bored you can go somewhere else.....

Besides, I couldn't stand to see animals in pain!!!:chuckle Wouldn't a vet tech make less as well??

I sympathize with you. We are the same age doing the same thing...trying to figure out what in the heck we are supposed to do in this world/with our life???!! I, too, am breaking out of a cubie!

Good Luck. Maybe you will get some more educated responses!

While I share your love of animals - I would get a dog and cat and become a nurse. As a vet tech - you would always be just that...a tech. As a nurse you will many more opportunities and future directions for when you become bored. Plus more school can lead in even more directions someday.

    Thanks Nesher.
Your absolutely right. I would be limiting myself if I were to become a vet tech. Extra schooling isn't going to kill me either. I think that you've just made up my mind for me. I've decided to percue a career in nursing! That will now be one of my new life goals. Thank you.

    p.s.
I's just started my courses here at Seneca College (PRe-Health Science) and I'm enjoying every minute of it. It's much better then sitting behind a desk in a cubicle and hating my job. At least now I know and feel that I'm getting somewhere and that I'm doing work for a good cause. If anything, I would strongly recommend College/University to anyone who wishes to do so but has second thoughts. It can get expensive, going to school, but isn't your future worth it? I know it is!

Thank you everyone for your thoughts. You've been a great help to me.

    Regards,

    Kevin
