I know this topic was already covered, but I need clarification. Please help.

I am just now taking the preliminary stuff to start my associates for becoming an RN. I eventually want a BS, but I have to start somewhere first. I would like to either be Ob or psych. Is that possible with only an associates? What would my options be with only an associates? Also, what is the average pay for someone new with only an associate in a US hospital. I am only asking because I want to make sure it will be enough for my mortgage and student loans. Any advice will help. I am trying to start a new career and it is a bit scary. I hope I am not crazy for following a passion. Just want to make sure I wont bankrupt my husband and myself in the process.

An ADN is fine for most Nursing Jobs, until you want to get into management.

Pay is dependent upon area, but starting pay of $25 to $40 per hour is a general range.

There are numerous ways/paths to becoming a nurse. Pick what works for your timeline, circumstances, lifestyle, and budget.

My employer is paying for my entire BSN program. Books, tuition and all.

If you are worried about going broke, get your ADN first. Then find an employer that will at least help you pay for the BSN, because there are many out there.

I've never heard of any staff nurse position that actually required a BSN.

ADN's work in all areas of staff level nursing.

Whether you graduate from an ADN or a BSN program, you'll take the same NCLEX. In my state, there is no difference in pay for 2-year and 4-year nurses, but some jobs (mostly management) require a BSN.

Really?? Yikes!

I guess I'm glad I went back to school if that's the case, but I don't see that spreading anytime soon.....but one never knows and it's best to be prepared.

There was one hospital in Houston that I applied at when I was a new RN, and they only took new grads who were BSN's, no ADN's.

They hired ADN's but only experienced ones.

That was one hospital out of about 14-15 that I applied at between Dallas and Houston and none of the others had that policy.

Smell -- Not sure where you're located, but some new RNs start at $19 to $25, depending on the geographics.

The hospital where I will be working hires ADN's. We start a $19.50/hour. After passing NCLEX we will make $22.50/hour, plus shift differential for midnights. I would recommend the ADN route, simply beacuse it is less expensive to get started and once you start working most hospitals offer tuition reimbursement if you want to pursue a higher degree. Be sure to check into different options for financial aid, apply for scholarships (there are scholarships out there for just about everyone!). Good luck to you!! Even if you have to make some sacrifices it will be worth it to you and yoru family in the long run.

Google for scholarships and grants rather than relying solely on loans. With the shortage there are tons of goodies out there...just have to jump thru some paper work hoops. You may qualify if you are a mom over 30 on some... do a little research and you will save yourself a ton. If google can't help...contact a University Book store (a University that has a nursing program)... I have seen books with info on such grants and scholarships at UVA. Good luck...

Thank you all. I obviously am not wanting to do nursing for the money; I have always wanted to help people. However, I just wanted to make sure that my dreams are not selfish to my marriage. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of money, so before I follow my dreams I just needed to make sure I can pay my half of the bills. We are in Lake County IL, so the cost of living is a bit high. I am sure with the numbers you've given me we can do it. Thank you for help.
