Can I get some input please?

I am hating med/surg nursing. I dread going to work, I get violently ill, you name it. I have been a nurse for about 6 months and have started looking for a new job. I have worked at the hospital that I am in for 7 years and just HATE it! I applied for an Ob job today- don't know if I have a snowballs chance in hell on that, but I couldn't think of anything else that I really enjoyed in school. I am working on my BSN (1 semester left- woo) and I am moving in May. I thought I would give an Ob job a shot (if I get it!) and then decide if I want to continue being a nurse after that. Are there any suggestions out there as to what else I could possibly do? I am thinking about getting a degree in computer science if this job doesn't change anything for me.

I was in the field of computer science before I entered nursing and was in the Silicon Valley when it went bust. If I were you, I would look elsewhere. There is just too much competition in computer science and it is too difficult to get established when competing against the cheap labor that is brought from overseas (sound familiar?) If you decide nursing is not for you, keep your license active, just in case, and look for something that there is a high demand for and hopefully something that isn't being overtaken by imported labor. Good luck.

It could be that you need to find your niche in nursing. Do you enjoy patient care, but just not the specific type of nursing that you are doing? It could be the unit or the hospital that you don't like. In my opinion, it would be too early for you to give up on nursing completely. You need to try some different areas before deciding that you don't like nursing. You mentioned that you have worked at your hospital for 7 years. What did you do before you were a nurse? Why did you decide to become a nurse?

I have been a nurse for a year and a half and I have recently decided that I made a poor career decision. I have tried 3 completely different types of nursing and disliked them all. I hated all of my clinicals in nursing school and I seriously considered changing my major several times. I know deep down that it is not about finding my niche. So, I'm embarking on a new career path. After you try a few different areas, you may decide the same. Even though I've decided to get out of nursing, I'm still glad I stuck with it long enough to know for sure.

I hated all of my clinicals except OB so I am trying to get a position on an OB floor in another hospital. I really do not enjoy taking care of patients, but I am trying to switch around a little to try to find my niche. I know that it is going to take me at least 2 years to get another degree so that is why I am trying to figure something else out now. I was a transporter and a Cardiac Monitor Tech before I was a nurse and I got bored with both of those very quickly. I never expected to find myself in health care dedicated to people (I wanted to be a vet when I was growing up) and now I just think that I made a mistake.

Since you could tolerate OB clinicals, you should at least give that area a try if you can get a position there. Or try any other area for awhile before you just plain decide to get out of nursing. At least then, you could be satisfied that you gave it your best try. Good luck.
