Soon we will have to document how many sheets of toilet paper or tissues used too...

....And how many flushes each sheet requires.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) now requires hospitals and other health care organizations to document adult smoking history and smoking cessation advice/counseling for three specific diagnoses: acute myocardial infarction, heart failure, and community acquired pneumonia. www.nursingworld.org/news/ananews.htm#smoking

It stops when hospital administrators say that enough is enough... JACHO is a voluntary program. There are many other ways to be evaluated and certified "a good hospital"

Problem is, no one wants to be the first to tell them to jump in a lake.

I agree. The dollar$ paid to them could be used to truly improve care.

There's another thread going here about JCAHO, which seems to be mainly a money-making venture for it's owners. Apparenty they do quite well selling "JCAHO approved" banners, signs, etc. to hospitals.
I'm 'justavolunteer', but JCAHO has done a grand job of making my life harder lately. Some JCAHO "genius" decided that IV bags are now "medication". Because volunteers aren't supposed to handle "medication", I can no longer take pts. to ultrasound if an IV bag has to go with them. The nurse has to do it! An RN who would be much more valuable to patients by remaining on the floor has to do the transport instead of me. Just one more example of JCAHO idiocy! How stuff like this is supposed to contribute to better pt care is beyond me. Even though I'm 'justavolunteer', I still know nonsense when I see it!

I don't know how JCAHO can keep adding more and more stuff to our plate...knowing we are already overstretched. I am sick and tired of 'work smarter not harder' and 'do more with less'. The paperwork and charting we do is way beyond ridiculous now.

And another thing...we ask too many personal questions on admission. I hate the question about 'has anybody forced you to have sex'. Common sense tells us not everybody needs to be asked this, but management (JCAHO too I assume?) says yes they do. <sigh>
