Sad and Discouraged! :(

Nurses Disabilities

Published

As I had posted a while ago, I have mild cerebral palsy. I have always dreamed of becoming a nurse and knew that even with my disabilty there would be a way I could still become one. Now, I am not so sure if I will be able.I think what has led to this discouragement and saddness is because I am begining to having to start to decide what I want to do for a career/ what college to attend and it is really making me think. I just worry that with my disabilty I won't be able to handle the 12hr standing period. Also, along with my disablility comes a learning disablity in the oh so dreaded math department.I have just never done well with it because of my disabilty. I am worried that this is really going to hinder me because of it becuase nursing requres math as well as and chemistry and chemistry has a lot of math in it too. Oh, it just makes me so sad. I really want to become a nurse but I just worry that all of this is going to hinder me. Sighhhhh.......:(

Future nurse, nursing is quite physically demanding, which you recognize. But not all shifts are 12 hours, and you always have the option - if you can afford it - of working per diem or part time.

The math that is needed for nursing is simple - the most difficult is ratios. Really.

you may want to speak with an advisor in a school of nursing, before deciding you are unable to pursue your dream.

best of everything to you.

There are other areas of nursing you could explore - Agree with Leslie, talk to someone who can evaluate your situation.

Specializes in Psychiatry, Case Management, also OR/OB.

Yes mam... explore your options before abandoning your dream. There are many areas of nursing that could be open to you, I believe. Just have a sit down with an advisor... ask the hard questions that a future employer may be thinking in his or her head (but can't ask u).

Good Luck!
