Yes, I've noticed at work an increase in flu/URIs in the past 2 weeks. Several people that I swabbed came back + for flu.

...sigh...I think I'm coming down with something now too! Grrrrr...

Yup, it is because of the cold weather. Even the nurses are affected.

I don't think there is a flu epidemic going on. As per usual it's a media beat-up and the drive is to ensure flu vaccine compliance.If you don't take the flu shot, the grim reaper is gonna git ya!!!

In my State (CT) the state health department has close to 1700 confirmed cases of flu, this time last year there was only 30 confirmed cases. That's a huge increase. We aren't even in our peak flu time yet. Last year peak was mid-February. We have close to 1700 confirmed cases, who's to say how many more cases of flu are out there that just haven't been confirmed due to the person not going to the doctor.

CT Pixie--when you say confirmed cases , what does that mean. Did cultures that were done come back positive for influenza?

Dont get me wrong, sick people are sick people. Whether it is influenza or another variant doesn't matter. The people still need help. I was just wondering if this was something the influenza vaccination would be of help agaisnt? Influenza like illness and influenza are two different things.

Yes, cultures done and + for influenza. 351 cases of Type A unspecified, 983 cases of Tye A (H3N3 seasonal) as well as 158 cases of Type B (seasonal) and 179 cases that were + for unknown type. there are a handful of cases of the other influenza types.

So, are these numbers unusual for CT? Secondly are these numbers any more accurate / believable than Obama's job numbers? Thirdly , if true is it possible the higher number of people getting the flu is because they have been vaccinated?

I'd say they are unusual. If last year there were only 30 confirmed cases of influenza at this time last year and now there are close to 1700 cases..then YES it's unusual.

I just looked and for the 2011-2012 flu season there were 1083 + influenza test results reported in CT. (see the 1st page 6th bullet itemization). So YES its unusual. We still have a few months left of flu season, we have not yet hit peak season and we are already almost 700 cases higher than the TOTAL for last years season.

Are they believable numbers? They come from the State of CT DPH and the CDC. Whether or not you believe the sourse is up to you.

The vaccination does NOT cause the illness. I'd say they got the flu because they didn't get the flu vaccine or they did get the vaccine but as we all know, the vaccine does not stop all strains.

Well, is the CDC reliable? How corporate is it? I see government agencies fudging real numbers all the time now.Vaccines lower the immune response. So someone vaccinated for one strain of flu is more likely to get infected by another.
