UK childrens nursing student wanting to go Florida

World Registration

Published

Hi,

I just wanted to ask the question of whether when I qualify if I can work in Florida?

I am currently doing a children BSC degree and a NMC registration.

Is there no way of doing nursing in the states, not even by doing an upgrade course or something??

Many thanks

Rosie

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

You need clinical & theory in adult, geriatric, pediatric, psych/mental health, & maternity/obstetrics to work in the US as US (like Canadian nurses) are generalist trained not specialty trained like the UK.

Would you even be able to secure theory & clinical practicum of sufficient hours in all the mandated areas?

Well I'm only doing hours in children nursing so no, not at this current stage.

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

Then you would not qualify for a nursing license in the US or Canada. :(

Even AUS requires adult, child, geriatric & mental health.

There is no nursing license in the US or CAN for one who is specialist trained in the UK standard of children's nursing.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Unless you have clinical and theory hours in Adult, Obstetrics, Mental Health and Paeds ( know you will be OK there) then you will not meet requirements to be licensed as a RN in the US. Do you know if you have any of these hours on your transcripts? Currently I do not think there are make up courses in the UK due to the long long wait for immigration and the one university that did do these course stopped doing it. US may have issues finding a school willing to let you make up hours but nothing stopping you once you know what is required just may be difficult

I believe Australia does allow the Uk nurses registration - RNs all of their specialties.

They are supposed to be only employed in jobs that fits their education. Which of course, Australia being very diverse from very big to very small health care facilities, nurses with narrow education scope can be, put and/or be placed/employed and accepted in areas that are way beyond the scope of practise and the conditions of their registration.

Though may I add, due to specialty nursing education, recent Australian education is now not being accepted much over in the UK.
