Philippine RN lisence needed to take NCLEX in U.S.?

World Registration

Published

Hello, I am a United States resident who studied abroad. Recently graduating from the Philippines with a BSN degree, I would like to know if I could apply for the exam even though i have not taken a licensure exam in the Philippines(country of my education).

I now want to take the NCLEX in ILLINOIS.

My friend in NY didnt have a Philippine RN lisence and she was able to take and pass the NCLEX.

Im wondering if its the same thing for IL.

If not i might just take it in a diff state and just endorse that lisence here in illinois after passing.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Welcome to allnurses!

What does the IL BON website say about applying as an internationally educated applicant? Have you looked?

Hello, I hope this post helps foreign educated nursing graduates and and foreign RNs in the future.

About me: U.S. permanent resident(greencard) who is a BSN graduate from the Philippines in '16. Currently living in the NW suburbs of Illinois.

Also, I have a cousin who graduated this year with BSN in the Philippines, and he is a US Citizen. In the Philippines for one to take the Nursing Licensure Exam, the applicant must be a filipino citizen.

I've been hearing stories from a distant family friend that her nephew was able to take the NCLEX in Illinois even though he didn't have a foreign license, I don't know how he did it but I'm getting even thinking of applying at NY, NJ VA, TX if I don't find a way soon  . So as of now I'm stuck and I may need to go back to the PH take the NLE.:blackeye:

Any tips would be appreciated.

I hope this post helps foreign educated nursing graduates and and foreign RNs in the future.

Examinations and Registration (R.A. 9173)

Having read the Illinois and Indiana application. In my understanding both Indiana & Illinois requires a foreign graduate to have a foreign license from the where you graduated from, passing a CGFNS examination(INDIANA), and a Credential Evaluation Service via CGFNS (ILLINOIS).

Illinois : https://www.idfpr.com/Renewals/Apply/Forms/RN-EN.pdf

  • CT-NUR Form (Verification of Licensing Agency/Board)--Submit verification of licensure from the state of original licensure, current state of licensureand any jurisdiction in which you have actively practiced within the last 5years. Current registration in another state is required by the Illinois Nursingand Advanced Practice Nursing Act.
  • A credentials evaluation report of your foreign nursing education from oneof the following Department approved credentialing services. The credentialsevaluation report must reflect proof of licensure in the country of education.
  • The Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools(CGFNS) Credentials Evaluation Service (CES). The required reportis the Healthcare Profession & Science Course-by-Course Report. The Division will download the credentials evaluation report fromCGFNS' Web site when it becomes available.

Indiana: PLA: Application & Instructions for Licensure by Examination for Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools

  • VERIFICATION OF LICENSURE - Graduates of foreign schools of nursing shall meet the following qualifications before being licensed in Indiana: Be licensed in the territory or country in which they graduated. We must receive official verification of your nursing license from the territory or country you graduated in.
  • Evidence must be provided that a candidate has taken and passed the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS) examination directly from the CGFNS to the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency. Those candidates who are equivalent to education as a RN in the United States are not eligible to become licensed as a LPN in Indiana.
Pursuant to 848 IAC 1-1-6, foreign candidates seeking licensure as an LPN by examination in Indiana must show evidence of having passed the examination prepared by the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (CGFNS).
