Canadian nurse looking to apply to New York state

I am a Canadian nurse with 5 years experience looking to move to the New York state. I passed the NCLEX exam and starting the CGFNS application. I understand that I can apply for my NY nursing license even before I submit the information to CGFNS, is this correct?

On the form 1 for the state licensing it states:"If you have ever taken the SBTP, NCLEX, or a state-constructed examination for licensure as either a Registered Professional Nurse or a Licensed Practical Nurse in the United States or its territories (except New York State), complete the following:"

I took and passed the NCLEX in Canada! I messaged the office by email and still have not received a response on how to answer this.

It also states that "If you took the NCLEX or SBTP Examination, send form 3 to the state in which you passed the licensing examination or request verification from Nursys" This appears to be for American NCLEX takers. As I understood I would not have to redo the NCLEX, it seems they do not recognize the NCLEX taken in Canada??

I've noticed the NY nursing form asks the same questions as the CGFNS!!! I also do not understand why Canadian nurses need to write an English exam (if they are not from Quebec).

Maybe I am not completing the correct forms, this all seems so confusing to me. If there is anybody on this forum that can help I would really appreciate it. Even if its to tell me an agency that can do the paper work for me.

If your training was done in English then you do not need to sit English exams for NY. You can send application to NY for RN but they will not look at your application until everything is complete with CVS from CGFNS. Seeing as NCLEX is relatively new to Canada I think the states are slowly getting used to Canadians having to pass it to work as a RN in Canada so we may see states accept it however not all Canadian colleges accept NCLEX if passed for the US so be prepared you may have to resit it
