I graduated a midwifery with 4 years university education midwifery from Turkey. I studied many nursing class( except internal medicine and adult surgical ). i worked 2.5 years nurse- midwife. I did application Board of Florida a registered nurse in Florida.They denied my registered nursing application. (I translated my transcript to the company of CGFNS which makes many mistake on my transcript.)Board of nursing examines only my transcript and decided that i should take all nursing classes including prerequisite classes . It will take more than 3 years. I am looking other state right now. What can i do? Which state is the best one? Do anybody have same situation? Can you help me,please? Thank you

You may find you have the same issue with other states as requirements are similar

Without the internal and adult studies it is doubtful you will meet the requirements for any state.

Have you or can ask any previous nurse that actually are in the States and really in a working job? Many of the rules and regulations in the USA have recently changed (from needing to provide your country's local license, a copy of your S/S#, etc) so that's why it's best to see if those you contact from your country are more recent US workers and best if within the last 1-2 years.

Ask your college, ask the college president or a high official, ask your friends, ask your country's nursing board, find a immigration lawyer friend or contact, the list goes on but you get my idea. Good luck!

Hi everyone!

How can i get these classes(internal medicine& adult surgery) without taking prerequisite. Can it be online? I have degree a midwifery 4 years in my country. I had studied obstetric, children and disease, anatomy, psychology,physiology, pharmacology, etc... Can you help me?

You couldn't do it online because you need to do the clinical hours as well.I don't think there are any schools that would let you do just part of the nursing program.`If you want to be licensed as a nurse you may have to complete a nursing program.

The clinical hours need to be done at the same time as the theory hours. If you have clinical hours from your previous studies it would not count. Midwifery is not the same as a generalist nursing degree in the US & Canada

One needs adult med/surg, psych/mental health, geriatrics, pediatrics, and obstetrics/maternal-child theory & clinical hours. A bachelors in midwifery is not equivalent to a bachelors in nursing. Just like a UK children's nursing degree is not equivalent to a US BSN as US is general trained whereas UK is specialty trained

I would be shocked if a midwifery degree included geriatrics, psych/mental health and adult med-surg

Yes we did not have geriatric classes, but we have physical and mental health. You know that I have 4 years bachelor degree , becoming midwife is 6 months course and taking certificate. How can it equal with education? 4 years university+2.5 years work experience and if I go to nursing program 3 years , it totally will be 9.5 years. I will not be a professor . I like my job. I worked emergency unit.that why I am trying to become a nurse in here.

You were trained to the standards of the country you were educated in. Nurses in Australia do not receive OB/maternal-child/midwifery training and if want to become a RN in the US or CAN they must take the additional clinical & theory.

It doesn't matter how many years you went to school if you did not have the required nursing clinical & theory your education will not be considered equivalent.

There is also a credential as non-nurse midwife (certified professional midwife ) that is recognized in some states. They usually cannot work in OB or L&D but often in free standing birthing centers (depending on the state).

Certified Midwife option -

Graduate midwifery education for the Bachelor’s-prepared applicant who is not a nurse. Basic health-related prerequisite courses are required and the graduate is eligible to take the same national certification examination, administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board, as the graduate nurse-midwife. CMs are currently authorized to practice in only 5 states: DE, MO, NJ, NY, RI.
