British trained nurse in Quebec / Montreal

World Registration

Published

Hello, I posted this on a general nursing site, but I think here it is more appropriate. I am training in the UK as an adult nurse and finishing next year. My daughter is already a qualified paediatric nurse also in the UK. We are moving to Quebec next year as my partner is Canadian and would obviously want to practice there. I started looking into a professional registration on OIIQ but it is a jungle of rules and regulations, most important thing, can we sit the professional exams in English initially, and work in English as we have a limited knowledge of French at the moment. I would love to say I am intermediate in French but while I can happily talk about the weather, I can not discuss patient's bowel obstruction with the doctor jKu2nbPr+Fgsge+qBOVzDI41rbuwLmBmzjE42rTlIcowgbSMIThoxBwViKpSgMjaJQz2zY7UAUQNHRn0Gdo5DB3AATavZYAhSRItrmForRiVkMCAQKRz+QqNH2kUYh6dRgA= Is there any nurse on this forum working in Montreal, who came from abroad and can give me some info on the whole process? Many thanks. Monika

Something to be aware of, your transcripts may need to show clinical and theory hours in Paeds, Obstetrics, Mental Health and Adult. Not having these elements may stop you from getting registered as a nurse. This also goes for your daughter. I believe there is a requirement that you must pass acceptable French exam within 2 years and be deemed fluent and for that reason only a temp licence will be issued

I know for sure that I do not have paediatric and mental health theory hours because in the UK these are separate nursing branches, I am solely an Adult Nurse and my daughter is only Paediatric ( so she never worked with adults) . I think there are OIIQ will inform us once they see our transcripts whether we need to return to college in Quebec for a few months to study those subjects. This wouldn't be a problem but I think the college would also need to be attended in French. Do you know what is the acceptable exam, I have seen a name of it somewhere but can;t recall now , is it QELF? I need to check whether we can sit that exam in London before arriving,
