Australia-USA Education Needs

World Registration

Published

Hi all,

I've not yet started the application process however have done some research regarding attaining my US license.

I've be read through the old posts (circa 2009) re: the difficulty Australian nurses have when applying to register in the US due to the lack of maternity and paeds training.

I'm wondering if anyone would know whether a Diploma of Midwifery could be used to cover the maternity training, has anyone had any success with this?

Also I have failed to find any of the Otago supplementary courses discussed on forums a few years ago; does anyone know if these still exist?

thanks in advance.!

You cannot substitute postgraduate study with the undergraduate theory/clinical that they require.

The Grad Dip is considered by CGFNS when evaluating equivalency to a bachelor/diploma program but not for state licensure.

Hi RNsydneygirl (& all),

In which state do you intend to get registration?

I'm also pursuing registration in the USA (California, though at this stage it looks close to impossible).

So far I have just been lurking on forums getting the ropes of the maze!

However I did speak to the course coordinator at Deakin re their Peads course (no longer accepted by CA BON) & Midwif course. Not sure if this will help, but thought I should add it, for the sake of the ongoing situation. A summary of our conversation:

-from what she can unofficially gather, CA BON wants you to take the courses in CA schools; she could not provide a reason as to why paeds bridging course was no longer accepted.

-their last student who obtained registration was to WA (Washington state) a couple of years ago

-Deakin had been in contact via email with someone from CGFNS re obtaining approval of their bridging courses, however this contact had disappeared 6 months ago (?left organisation)

-she asked if I had any luck to get in touch with her (her details are on Deakin's website)

Hope that helps someone!

Any Aussie RNs out there able to provide info of their recent experience with US rego?

Hi Alexi,

I'm not sure yet, I have an interest in Seattle, Dallas, Minneapolis and Boston.

Did Deakin say why they hadn't had anyone accepted for a couple of years?

Thanks for the reply.

CA is impossible to gain initial licensure if you don't have a social security number.

I was initially licensed in Vermont and then moved to PA but that was in 2008 and I didn't need extra subjects (although VT did accept Deakin PDU courses at that time).

Hi all,

Late response here. I licensed in Hawaii (where I currently live). I completed Deakin PDU in maternity. Seems as though CA is extremely difficult to get initial licensure in. I initially applied for CA before moving to Hawaii but didn't actually re apply after I'd satisfied the maternity/obstetric requirement. Hawaii had no issues with Deakins PDU though.

Hope that helped a little..!
