Ahpra application refusal

World Registration

Published

Hi everyone,

I´m a registered nurse from Germany with 4 years experience. Went to the whole registration process with ahpra and waited 7 months. Today I received an email, that they are considering to refuse my application. The reason for that is, that they do not consider my training as equivalent with the Australian one. That is really a joke. Has someone ever been in this situation before? How did you write your appeal letter?

Hi Guys, I received this email from my case worker on 20th of June.

[COLOR=blue]Notice of Proposal to refuse registration

Board Considered your application 05 June 2014

[COLOR=blue]Proposal to refuse

After considering your application, and all information and documents you provided to support your application, the Board is proposing to refuse your application for registration under section 82(1)© of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, as in force in each state and territory (the National Law). This letter is notice to you, under section 81 of the National Law, of the Board's proposal to refuse registration to you.

[COLOR=Blue]Reasons for decision

The grounds for this decision are that:

. You have not satisfied section 53(b) of the National law, as your qualification of a Diploma of Higher Education Pre-Registration Nursing (Adult) at the University of (NOT ENTERED DUE TO PRIVACY) has been assessed against the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) at level 6, and is determined as not being substantially equivalent, or based on similar competencies, to an approved qualification, which must be at AQF level 7.

In order for you to qualify for registration under section 53© of the National Law, the National Board requires that you successfully complete and Board-Approved Bridging Program in which you will have your competencies assessed.

Above is a word for word official letter from AHPRA

I am a Adult Nurse with experience in ICU and MAU and I hold a DipHE in Adult nursing. Apparently, a Diploma is no longer good enough.

Has anyone got any advice in regards to appealing this decision. Any argument suggestions for the appeal?

I will be contacting the AU High Commission in London on Monday and AHPRA Sunday night to D/W my case worker. But based on the letter, I don't see any other option than completing the bridging program. They have also included (not attached) a letter of eligibility for a Bridging Program and I have a few weeks to make and appeal or apply for the course.

I'm totally lost... my hopes and dreams just went up in smoke and I feel in such limbo at the moment, do I stay and convert my diploma to a degree in the UK, do I appeal and appeal or just admit defeat and fork out for the bridging program which also means starting the WHOLE AHPRA application from THE BEGINNING again!!

Surely the AQF level 6 should be based on a Australian Diploma of 2 years and not a UK one which is taught in a University for 3 years?

Please Help!! xx

Sorry I have no answer for the decision. I do think there will be many appeals not only to AHPRA but to politicos, employers who believe they cannot get locals for the jobs, highcommissions and newspapers will be awash with discussion both in the UK and from another angle on things here in Australia. So stay positive, hang in.

The dirty part really is that the immigration assessment org, ANMAC is giving the ok to EU and UK nursing education and nurses are getting skilled PR visa's but the a ReGistration board are not okay the education. Many are living here in Australia waiting for registration. This is due to the law passed when AHPRA was formed that all health practitioners must be assessed on the education of Australian equivalent and that's the sticky part. I have heard experience is not considered. ANMAC are not covered by this law and still it's seems continue to give positive assessments out to nurses from the UK giving false hope it seems now to even work as a skilled worker! What a laugh on the Aussie system!

Btw I do know several Australian nurses have been in your position wanting to go home to the UK after completing Australian degree. Australian education is no longer accepted in the NMC in the UK due to , Apparently due to lack of clinical hours, and we are not specialised in streams, we specialise later into paediatric, mental health, which may also be a contributing factor.

I doubt this subject is cut and dried and will be put to rest and as they say the sh...... Is about to hit the proverbial now that UK diploma holding nurses have been denied registration. Though as an Australian educated nurse I would ask the NMC to also reconsider as well through the coming appeals and discussions for Australian nurses.

If and it's a big if, you must do the bridging program, you do not do the AHPRA application again.

As can be read in earlier posts, there seems to be no way to get the registration from AHPRA at this moment other than repealing the repeal which would require a lawyer. Even bridging courses are not offered often. Good luck!

@ceridwyn

Will wait 240 months until the government support for non employed people starts :D ;)

Good luck with that. Last nurse thst had breskdown and could not work as RN was told to go and be pc or home care. :(

@Denise

That is what I will proceed with too, in the next couple of days...

Danapal , did you apply for Enrolled Nurse ??

well this thread is depressing, how long has APHPRA been refusing EU nurses ??

im from Oz, live in Sydney and am engaged to a german girl who lives in munich, we are just getting ready to apply for a fiance visa.

My fiance is an RN in germany since 1996 and in ICU the last 8 years . We had planned on getting her assessed by APHRA for an RN when she gets here (about 12 months away) , seems like its not even a possibility :-( and maybe not even likely to have a successfull EN assesment :-(

Has anyone from the EU got a successfull EN if they didnt get an RN ??

@atgreg Not yet, too much other things to consider and to do after migration... However, it is on the agenda.

Well, it seems to be a Non-UK thing. Although within the EU all countries educate similar topics by law since 1973, the UK educated RNs get their registrations without issues in AU normally.

Hi, thanks for the reply, I hope AHPRA have some rationality and if they say german RN training is AUS EN standard then they take the german experience for the EN assesment.

I'd like to keep in touch and find out how your application goes for info when my fiance arrives, fingers crossed we get the fiance visa

Ive also read on other forms that UK diploma qualified RN's are getting ANMAC visa approval but then having the same trouble by not getting accepted by AHPRA, unbelievable madness !!!.

Hey everybody.

Just a quick update. I got my PR visa and have started getting organised to say good bye to Denmark and hello to Sydney.

One of the first things I have to do upon arrival is to check in with the APHRA-office and make sure that I get my registration :)

Good luck to all of you.
