Getting a job in the ER.

Any NPs out there working in the ER? What kind of advice would you suggest for breaking into this speciality? I have some RN experience in the ER, not years worth but a decent amount to be comfortable and know the basics.

I read a really good article about this very subject, wish I could give you the link. Basically it boils down to either working in the ER as an RN and having an in with your hospital, or starting out in urgent care and then moving into the ER. Of course you might be able to get a jop right out of school but it depends on your experience and openings.

The children's hospitals around here use PNPs in their fast track areas, generally not their core unless its a particular NP who's been there a long time and is well trusted.

This is a great question that I myself have been wondering. I am a current ER RN, working on an FNP degree, and I could see myself working ER as an NP. Unfortunately since my current facility has a residency program we do not hire NP's for the ER, so I am not sure how to make myself more marketable for an ER NP job.

I hear ya, the ER I worked at as a RN isn't really hiring right now due to the saturation of the market in my area. So basically I have to go out and get a job at a ER without them really knowing me.

I had 10 years exp as a staff nurse in a level one trauma center when I became an APN. However, since they have an ER residency program they werent wanting APNs.

However, I networked and did take a part time position in an ER where I knew some of the docs. With all my hours that I work at my current non-ER job, I no longer work in the ER.

I would suggest networking with physicians/residents that you might know.
