Can I renegotiate after accepting offer?

Specialties NP

Hi there,

I started my first NP job this week only to find out that the health insurance plan is absolutely awful and I will essentially need to change all of myself and my families providers as well as pay more than double what I had been paying monthly.

I feel like I was duped. I had no idea that I should have even asked what monthly family coverage would cost.

I would have still taken the job, but I would have negotiated my salary at least a couple dollars higher per hour to even it out.

Is there anything I can do at this point. I feel angry and frustrated. I know I don't have to stay in this position forever but I already took a $2/hr pay cut from my RN job to take it.

Thanks

I have had several nurse friends get their NP only to go back to bedside nursing because the pay was so much worse. They had a completely different deal with the hospital and were contracted under the doctors contract… Anyways, it completely cooled my jets about getting an NP since they had a lot more responsibility and less pay… So wrong to punish nurses for getting a higher education.

I think insurance coverage overall has gotten worse and employers are offering less and less… sorry you got burned.

True, although I would never return to an RN job for pay alone. My hospital had a separate benefits meetings for the nurses who are union and I'm sure they got a better deal.

I'm still happy with my choice, despite this road bump, and think this position will open many doors. This is my time to learn :-)

That's good. I see a lot of positions for NP positions and I think there will be more and more positions available in the future. You have a great attitude and you will gain good experience which will make you more valuable.

Caveat emptor, I'm afraid. If you didn't ask upfront what the costs are and already accepted the offer, I can't see what their incentive to renegotiate would be. Your options may be to suck it up or to quit.

My two cents.... work for 6 months then re negotiate. You will be more productive, and in addition the employer will have time and money invested into you. If in 6 months they are not willing to negotiate then you will be able to search for another position but will have some experience. You can try and re negotiate now but the hospital does not have much invested in you so they might move on to the next candidate. Are you prepared for that? Is the job market for NPs good where there are other positions? If so then it might be worth it to go back to them for more money.

Have you done your research on the NPs in your new area? Is the pay comparable to others in the area?
