Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

That's not an allergy!!

Feeling nauseous after taking Vicodin, having "bad dreams" with morphine, etc...those are simply side effects (or adverse effects, if you want to be technical here). But definitely not an allergy. And now I have to log it in your chart that you are "allergic" to something simply because of a common side effect, or because you don't like the taste of it. Unfortunately, it's not in my scope of practice to determine what your allergies are, so I have to rely upon your ridiculous word.

Again, that's not an allergy.

"You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

You left your baby sitting in a meconium diaper for several hours. Do not gripe at me when I have to practically scrape it off his hiney and make him cry in the process.

My MIL is one of thosewho is 'allergic' to ....it would seem.....everything!

She's always saying she 'can't breathe' ...and all the while complaining outloud and without a wheeze or a gasp. Never gets a rash or swelling or anything to indicate an allergy. She refuses to think it might be an emotional/mental problem she has. I honestly don't know how her doc puts up with her. She goes to have massages to 'move the toxins' out of her body, and these are just nice, non-medical type massages. But she thinks they work because her skin 'itches' afterwards. Couldn't be the increased circulation of where she's been rubbed, noooo,:uhoh3: it's those built-up toxins from her allergies, doncha know. I have been sorely tempted to instruct her on what a true allergic reaction is, but I'm afraid it would give her ideas, a little knowledge being a dangerous thing!

It has been my experience that if one gets nauseous when taking vicodin, they don't need it in the first place !!!! if they are in pain, they won't feel nauseous !! sounds like med seeking, to me..........

When they start smelling like something found at Pike Place Market, it's time to load 'em up for a trip to the Chevron car wash.
Totally OT but I visited Seattle for the first time (actually my first time to the West Coast) in July this year and really liked it, particularly the underground tour :) Now, back to things all patients would be better off hearing!

To the naked patient doing laps around the ICU, IV's ripped out, blood flying everywhere, leather restraints hanging from his wrists, who shoved the charge nurse into the floor, threw an IV pole at respiratory and has every nurse in the unit trying to corral him while he's yelling, "Ya'll are trying to kill me, ya'll are trying to kill me..."

No, we aren't. Really. But you're talking us into it...

No, I wouldn't treat my sister this way. I'd ask her what on earth she was thinking when she ordered a pizza into ICU after she'd had a major heart attack and been put on a strict diet, I'd take the pizza away, throw it into the trash and probably yell at her for 5 minutes for being suicidally stupid. Now, are you SURE you want me to talk to you like I'd talk to my sister?

Don't give her any ideas!!

It's awful when the urge to educate is eclipsed by the patient's imagination.

How would anyone ever make it through without their very own slave? I would like to add that simply because you ate everything in site long enough to need my help....does NOT mean I will continue to feed that habit! So stop asking!

Not necessarilly. I had a serious case of polynephritis a few years ago. Terrible, unbelievable pain. However, I still could NOT keep any narcotic pain killers down! Massive IV phenergan to tolerate it at all !
