Nurse marries patient?

Nurses Relations

Published

No judgment on the specific nurse involved in this story, but when I read the "feel-good" headlines about the Boston Marathon bombing victim marrying a nurse who cared for him, I didn't feel good. Love is grand and I wish them well, but I wish the headlines weren't raising ethical questions. I'm hoping there are extenuating circumstances that add some distance to that nurse-patient relationship before it became romantic.

From what I heard....she wasn't involved in his direct care.

I'm relieved to hear that.

My feeling is, I hope they waited a reasonable period of time before dating. But, really, it's a technicality. I doubt if she used her position as a nurse to take advantage of the patient. In this crazy world, let's celebrate love and marriage! May they have beautiful, healthy children one day, and love each other for the rest of their lives!

From the articles that I have read I am not getting a clear message on how involved this nurse was in this patient's care nor how the actual relationship started to develop. I personally do not believe in crossing those professional boundaries of the nurse-patient relationship. However, I also am a firm believer in "everything happens for a reason." It does seem that it was one of those situations. Is it questionable? Sure. But, I do feel happy for them and wish them all the best. I agree with PPs in hoping that they did wait a reasonable amount of time before dating.

This happened in my family. A female family member received in-home hospice care for the last two month of her life. A few months later, her husband married one of the CNA's who had provided care to his wife.

Of course I heard some mumbling & whispering from some disapproving family members....but my own parents took the high road and welcomed this woman with open arms. She was a wonderful, loving woman , a free spirit who brought much joy to her new family. She and the man she married are both gone now, and I always felt lucky to have had her in my life.

Wishing the newlyweds love and luck in the future!
