Nasty nurses

Nurses Relations

Published

I do not like nurses that use their seniority to bully newer nurses. There is this one nurse at my job she seemed ok at first but I feel I have to watch out for her. She is mean and takes advantage of my newness. The last time she had an admission that I ended up doing because she didnt feel like. Initially the patient was supposed to go to a room in my section of the unit but the pt's family decided she wanted to be in a room in another section. It was at that point that it became this nurses's pt but when she realized the family member was crazy and she didnt complete it, I had to. That was number one. Number two she takes first break but takes her sweet time to give me report and comes back late then instead of being available so I can give her report, she starts taking care of her pts while Im waiting to go on break. I really dislike this. How can I demand my respect and stop these older nurses from thinking it's ok to talk to me anyhow and walk all over me?

You have been fired three times in one year?

What is the common denominator in this scenario?

Since you read my résumé and know all about my career why don't you tell me? Wait let me look at myself again. I might not be good at Math since I had to take Pharm Tests a couple time in the past year too. SMH....

First, I am very sorry to hear about the hard times you are enduring. I cannot imagine how frightening it must be to have children and no income. I hope you find a job in or out of nursing very soon. One that pays enough to allow you to live decently and save.

That said, and I do not mean to "pile on" at all, if you have been fired 3 times I think you have to look at how people are perceiving you. Obviously it is not good.

Most nurses whether they are good, bad, or indifferent, manage to plod along for the most part.

So please realize that while you think (and probably are) a nice person, you are putting something out there that others are seeing as negative in a big way. Is there anyone you worked with that you bonded with at all and that you could call and ask them to be honest with you about how your co-workers perceived you? I think that would be a big help. Otherwise you will end up repeating the same pattern.

I wish you all the good fortune in the future and really hope things turn around for you and your burdens become much lighter.

Usually, people who are fired for unjust reasons and have references they do get hired again. If I had a job each time you would think? I have worked for some pretty big hospitals that people wait years to get into. I do hae positive experiences but since this past year just awful! I do make friends, use them as references, and keep in touch.

Why don't people do a search on fired on here and you will see how many people get fire for whatever reason. On another note, I don't have a staff job I am Traveler/Agency. We don't get treated the same as a staff member. It is a known fact. Read those forums too. So I don't think people are understanding that I don't get Permanent jobs and lose them. I work with one to no day orientation and float to many units. I know several different specialties and can adjust to them. I am not on one floor in any given week. Since I work in big hospitals the most floors I have worked on was 20 in a month. I have to be very fast and knowledgeable. Please, I am just a body to these people.

*When I was fired for a Facebook posting when I don't have Facebook. The nurse always gets people fired for whatever. SWhen the Nurse Manager retires she probably won't get away with it. But I was the problem I was asking for it.

*When I was fired for not hanging a Heparin bag after I documented it. Well, my friend said "People are mean and he just didn't like you." Men can be just as catty. I guess I was asking for that too. Darn it!

*Finally, this time they probably didn't want to deal with a nurse who doesn't doesn't push Cardiac medications on a Medical Surgical floor. Maybe I should of because now that I didn't it must of been my attitude.

Sure I told all these people to get rid of me. I have the problem. OK. Come on people. No, I am no means am I perfect and I don't pretend to be. Keep on judging me you wouldn't last two seconds in my shoes. I don't have someone holding my hand telling me it will be okay or paying my bills for me. What I need to look at is the career I am in and what type of places I work in. It isn't stable.

If I listened to advice in this thread I would be suicidal. Usually, when you tell people off the net they do their best not to work there not tell me to look within.

I'm not going to rehash all your post. I will say this…no one deserves to go through what you went through (living your car, etc.). However, many people think there is more to each story when someone says they have been fired 3 times in one year--and I must include myself in that group that believes there is something more here than you let on. Perhaps you do have extraordinarily bad luck. Either way, you need to get over being a victim in this situation (even if you were) and look at how you can make yourself a better nurse. (and be less defensive toward people whose views differ from yours)

I think people are confusing the words respect and trust. I respect everyone and trust no one. Lol! Respect shouldn't be something someone earns because everybody deserves respect. Not everybody deserves your trust though, so... be careful who you give it to.

I could not agree more! Everyone deserves your respect, but not everybody deserves your trust.

To the OP, this sounds like an assertiveness problem. If it's time to go on your break, you better speak up! While she probably knew you were taking your break next, don't assume that she did and that she was just being nasty. She was probably waiting for you to come talk to her. Either way, if you need something, say something - even if its from an older, scarier nurse (I'm only a 5 month old new RN as well so I definitely know how this feels). No ones going to help you if you don't ask for help first.

With the admission - If I had time, I probably would have gone ahead and finished it for her as a courteous gesture (like a previous poster said). But if my other pt suddenly became unstable or something, I would have let the other nurse know the situation and that I wouldn't be able to help out with the admission. Either way, I would have made sure she knew that it was HER pt (and not mine), but I would definitely help get the pt settled if I was able to.

You can totally have that guano. I'm sure no one will complain.

Nice...referring to your co-workers as ****.

And that is why this profession continues to go round and round. The last thing I would do, as a seasoned nurse and former manager is confront her. I would find out what makes her tick and get her support. If she is a bully you won't know until the yogurt hits the fan, is she a bully that will back down when confronted or make things worse. Most bullies will make things worse.

Seems you two are defensive because you don't like how I stick up for myself with facts. Of course you are in a group. Cliques rule!

I am very sorry you have had a bad year. It is clear that you are frustrated and angry. Maybe consider not working agency and get on board somewhere that offers you stability.

I wish you the best.
