Has anyone ever look down on you because you are a nurse

Nurses Relations

I'm talking about doctors or maybe even friends or family. My uncle once said with a disgusted look on his face e don't do nursing they have to give bath and stuff. My friend's boyfriend once said the work is demeaning since all they do is wipe butts. Hearing these stories are really sad. They are misinformed and very cruel. All of us will one day be in a situation where we might need help in that type of way.

Never. And actually quite the opposite, I usually get," I couldn't do that and glad you are able to" and " We need people who want to take of other people".

I guess I've been pretty lucky. There are enough nurses on my circle and family that I have never encountered that socially. My family has also spent significant time in the hospital watching my grandfather's health decline that they know how hard nurses really work.

I've never had a doctor treat me with disrespect because I'm "only" a nurse or "only" a corpsman or a student or whatever, but my personality doesn't tolerate that sort of thing well, and I would assume that most doctors pick up on that pretty quickly!! I treat them as equals, and have generally received the same treatment in return. Same goes for others in the industry that I've encountered over the years.

My husband's mom was talking in the car to his cousin and I, saying how nurses aren't regarded well in Germany because they don't do much other than wipe butts and I had to say to myself, "Somebody's got to do it, and I guarantee it wouldn't be you (his mom)". She then of course went on to say how she loves nurses and nurse practitioners provide the best care and I was wondering how confused she was or if their health-care food chain is just arranged differently from ours.

Nurses are regarded differently in other countries. We once had a resident who was always willing to assist with IVs. He once told us that in his country (I forget which one - it's been so long ago >

It's all perspective. How many times have we gone into a restaurant and eaten off a perfectly clean plate and not appreciated that a person who is someone worked to make sure that plate was clean? Until people can be appreciated regardless of what they do, there will always be someone willing to look down on someone else for what they think they do as they define them by it. =/
