What do ya'll know about Cary?

U.S.A. North Carolina

I have heard that Cary is a great place to live. I am not from NC, nor do I live there right now. Just wondered if anyone had any opinions on that city or any city for that matter. We are wanting to move as soon as hubby is done with the Air Force. Any comments will be greatly appreciated

Do not live there (live FAR to the east), but hear it is expensive and overgrown. This city has experienced explosive population increase in the last 20 years or so.

Hi Abby,

I live in Cary and it's nice enough. Expensive and even more expensive depending on where you are. They're building new townhomes up the street and those start in the $300,000 range. Don't know about you but that's ridiculous to me. Average price of a starter home in the area is probably in the $250-300K range.

Do you love homeowners associations or playing keep up with the Joneses? If you do you'll love Cary! Here, from what I understand, they told the Red Roof Inn that they couldn't build one with a red roof because it went against the zoning bylaws. They even paint manhole covers green to match the grass.

Not to say it isn't a good place to live - great schools if you have kids yadda yadda yadda but if you want to live in a town with a little more personality you might look elsewhere :) Taxes are slightly higher in Cary compared to surrounding towns to cover the cost of painting those manhole covers.

It's like Pleasantville on steroids. I think if we'd have known then what we know now we might have picked another location.

Feel free to PM if you have any specific questions :D

I just wrote a huge message and had it erased, grhhh! I just bought a house in Cary, and I love it (so far). I'm single, no kids... I just moved here because I like it and its very affordable compared to everywhere else I've lived.

Its safe, clean, pretty, and very convenient; minutes to great shopping, hospitals, universities, the airport, and the nightlife/jobs of the downtown areas in the Triangle.

I've found the people to be kind, welcoming, and interesting. I think it is actually less snobby and status oriented than most upper-middle-class towns.

Send me a private message, if you'd like!

Hi Yeepers,

Your post cracked me up. Pleasantville on steroids really sums it up... :lol2: I didn't know they painted the manhole covers green, that's pretty funny.

There was a big debate last year about a guy flying a large American Flag in his yard - the homeowners assoc. had a problem with that - the poor guy was made out to be some lunatic and it made the News - CRAZY... A lot of the homeowners assoc. can dictate what color you paint your house, if you can build a shed in the backyard, etc.

We live in Clayton (the new Cary) and my husband wants to sell our house and get out of town before the taxes get any higher and people start telling us what we can and can't do to our home...

Hey Susan,

It's pretty crazy. We have a guy who lives down the road from us and he's the local "kook". He probably moved out here when there was nothing but farmland thinking he was getting away from it all and, poor guy, it got all built up around him. Anyhow, he's been here so long that he predates the bylaws and whatnot so his is the only house that's got junk all over the yard and stuff strewn all over.....well, let's say it's not the typical Cary house :D I LOVE IT!!

Dunno if you read in the papers not too long ago....there was a HOA coup it made big news locally...well, it was actually my HOA. I tell ya...these people haven't got anything better to do.

Anyhow, we're here for the short-medium term but the moment we can find something outside the city limits we're going for it!!

Believe it or not, back in the early-mid 70's (when my husband-to-be and I were attending UNC in Chapel Hill), Cary seemed nothing more than a quaint village.
