Temporary move to NC

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

I'm a new grad from CA moving to NC for work. I'm planning on staying in NC for about 1-2 years, but I don't intend to become a resident of that state. My permanent residency will still be in CA. I'm trying to figure out what I have to do in regards to driver's license, car registration, car insurance. If I'm a non-resident and don't want to give up CA residency, do I have to switch everything over to an NC driver's license, or can I just keep everything as is? I've spoken to CA and NC DMV and have not received a clear answer from either...they just didn't know.

A year or longer you need get a local drivers license ect. but be sure to keep your CA nursing license. It will cost you every year but its totally worth it, it will make everything easier when you return to CA.

you have 60 days from the date you establish a permanent residence in nc. you should be able to find everything you need here: ncdot: new to nc or moving?

good luck with your move, and welcome to nc.
