New grad friendly parts of NC?

Well after no success in finding work in Florida, I am considering a move to North Carolina. I will need to bring my ailing parents with me and am really looking for new grad friendly areas of NC. Maybe Raleigh, Greensboro? I have ACLS/BLS/PALS. Will finish BSN in August and EMT-B by the end of the year. Would like to be in. Level 1 trauma center cardiac/telemetry units or ED if possible.

Any tips for relocation? Any particular hospitals that are new grad friendly? Thanks in advance!

I'm in Burlington just east if Greensboro. The vast majority of hospitals in the state, especially the major ones have new grad programs, and since you will have your BSN you'll be in a good position. The Cone system that's in and around Greensboro prefer BSNs. I got hired in the ED in Burlington for a new grad residency. Not a level one trauma center, but I'll get some experience there before I try and get a job out at Wake Med in Raleigh.

I'm a pre-nursing student, 3rd career, CNA right now (first career Marines, second career was public school education, teacher then administrator, Here is a link for the Level1-3 trauma hospitals. NC DHSR OEMS: Designated Trauma Centers Check out Vidant they run a Level 1 hospital in Greenville, NC, hour to the coast, home of East Carolina University (they have a nursing school, medical school, PA school), I live about an hour from there (on the coast) but I was a patient there, awesome hospital, they do have a "new" nurse program. Have you ever considered the military? You can work for DOD even as a civilian. Check out usajobs.com

I worked for FirstHealth of the Carolinas at Moore Regional Hospital. There were always several jobs posted specifically for new grads. When I went through my orientation there were several.

I appreciate the link! I have it bookmarked so I can use it as a resource when I am looking for hospital residency programs to apply to!

As for military - not really my thing, and also, with ailing parents, I'm not really looking to get into the military or anything right now. My priority is finding work, caring for them, and getting settled somewhere (again). We already moved once for school, so moving another time is something we were trying to avoid, but it seems inevitable, unfortunately.

I'm hoping to be in a city, not any place too rural - is Burlington rural? I've only ever heard of my friends visiting Raleigh, Duram, or Greensboro, so those are the only areas I have any remote idea about. Hoping to find a decent 2 bedroom for my parents and I as well. Any ideas on good locations where it would be okay to leave two elderly people while I'm working 12 hour shifts? I worry about them being alone for so many hours, but I want them to have neighbors they can trust. If that makes sense?

Can you explain "the Cone system" a bit more? Is that a group of hospitals? Also, is Wake Med a good hospital for new grads? Are they welcoming if I were to apply for a cardiac or telemetry unit? (I'm not so good with neuro or ortho units)

I guess that really depends on what you think rural is :D Burlington isn't a huge town, but it's fairly big. I know that there are a lot of people around here who live in Burlington of Mebane but work in Greensboro or Chapel Hill. I think that Burlington or Mebane would be ok for your parents to be on their own while you're at work. I think that most people in the area are nice, although like anywhere there are people who aren't.

The Cone system includes Moses Cone, Welsey Long, Women's Hospital in Greensboro, Moses Cone Behavioral Health, Annie Penn Hospital, and doctor's offices and a an extended care place. Most recently, Alamance Regional Medical Center, the hospital I worked as a CNA at and got my RN job at joined the Cone system. I know that with Moses Cone, the way they do their new grads for the ER is you rotate through all the EDs in their system (except for ARMCs) and then at the end they will place you in one, so there's no guarantee you would end up at Moses Cone which has a level 2 trauma center. As far as Wake Med goes, I don't know a whole lot about their new grad program. A nurse that I used to work with at my hospital was working in their ED before she moved and loved it, but did tell me that their new grad program can be kind of hard to get into for the ED.

If you were to move here I would recommend trying to get into any ED, regardless of whether or not it's a trauma center. Get a few years of experience and then move onto a level 1 trauma center if that's what you want. I initially wanted to do the same thing as you but at the end of it all I was just happy to end up in an ED period. So I'll put in a few years here and then apply at Wake Med again, where I ultimately want to end up. :)

Anyone have any contact info for HR or recruiters in these areas? Coming from out of state I'd love an email address or something so I can plan a trip up to potentially meet and interview.

Any guidance would be great. I'm actually going to start looking at the websites for the hospitals you have all mentioned so I can learn more about the facility and the options I may have.

You NC folk seem super nice already. Seems like it might be just the place to move to for me and my parents! :)

Greensboro is a great place to live,but I would avoid Cone Health. When I interviewed they were unbelievably unorganized and unprofessional. I'd look into Winston-Salem and Novant Health, I started there as a new grad and it was wonderful :)

Thanks! I just passed boards so I will start applying to these as well as Cone Health. Sometimes you just gotta start somewhere, right?

I'm just hoping I can land an interview with a Florida license! I plan to apply for NC license once I start getting responses on applications. :)
