Duke ABSN Fall 2011

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi all!

I know its early and the application isn't due until December 1st, but I was wondering if there was anyone else out there applying to the Duke ABSN program to start in August of 2011! I've already read through some of the previous semesters' threads and it seems like a great outlet for discussion/ questions/ nerves!

Let me know :)

Hey, murph! My personal statement was about 4 pages *double* spaced and I thought I had a lot to say LOL. Since they didn't specify a limit I still tried to keep it as concise as possible while still being in-depth, and I think I did a pretty good job with that. I received great feedback from everyone who I let read it, so hopefully Duke will think the same :) I've been trying to think of something else other than DUSON but I'm just too excited!

My essay was only about 3 pages double spaced. I also tried to keep it condensed. But since they don't have a limit, I wouldn't worry about it! I am still trying to deal with one last reference - he had a lot of trouble getting the written part uploaded and I'm not sure why it never occurred to him to mention that to me. So hopefully we can work that out at some point today. But worrying about that doesn't help when I need to be studying for a microbiology exam tonight!

I am finishing up micro and nutrition this semester and will be taking Anatomy next, but not for Duke. I have had it before but more than 7 years ago, so need to take it again. I'm hoping it will all be very familiar.

Congrats to all that submitted and good luck! Based on prior years, we should know something by Christmas! (oh, I'll be counting the days to Christmas for a whole new reason this year...)

Hey, oaktown. One of my references had a hard time trying to upload his recommendation letter as well. The system kept saying that the document was over the specified limit or something (I think two pages) when it really wasn't. Anyway, after tinkering with the document by removing a few of the words, it was finally able to upload. The application site has been moving slowly the past couple of days and I would expect some quirks since a flood of people will be submitting today, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem. The good thing is that as long as you have the three references that you *know* are going to submit on your behalf already on the app, you can submit your application and they can upload documents after the deadline (although you can't change your reference list after you've submitted the application). Anyway, good luck on your micro exam tonight!

By the way, I was wondering if any of you are already BLS certified? If so, will your certification cover you through the entire program? I'm thinking that if I'm accepted, I will just take the class over the summer so that I won't have to worry about renewal while I'm in the program.

Hi!

I submitted my application earlier today. Last night I tried to upload it, but the system closed the app early

I freaked out sooooo much last night! I thought I missed the deadline, but when I called M in the morning she explained everything to me. It felt so good to know that I did not miss the deadline.

I am also finishing some pre-reqs- Stats and Anatomy I. Next semester I will take a History class but not for Duke. Other than that, I am so excited to hear something yet nervous at the time! At least I will start volunteer at my local hospital in the L&D floor, too bad I did not start it earlier, I am sure it would have helped me in the app.

Did anyone had problems opening the completed application PDF? I tried both of my computers upstairs and it did not open, but I made sure I read over my app before I even hit ready to submit!

Ahhh, the wait is gonna kill me. where is everyone else applying?

Congrats on submitting your application, Amisadai! I don't really have any volunteer experience in the health care setting, although I did complete an Allied Health track in high school. I also volunteered for an educational program for middle and high school students while i was in college, but that's about it. I don't think that they are only looking to accept individuals with experience in health care. One impression that I get of Duke is that they really appreciate diversity, and accept individuals with a wide scale of experiences. I know it's hard, but we just have to try and not worry so much :)

Oh, and I was able to save the PDF of my application just fine when I submitted yesterday. But if you can't right now, don't worry about it because you can still access it and save later once the hoopla calms down. Oh, and I know this may be crazy, but I haven't applied to anywhere else. I figure if I don't get in this time, then I will keep working and apply to Duke and other schools for Spring 2012 entry. I believe that DUSON is *the* school for me, so I haven't given other ones too much thought right now. I'm still young, and if Spring 2011 isn't the time for me to start, then I will be fine waiting another semester.

At least you know where your heart is. I love the Duke program, but I am so worried about the age thing even though I am still young!

It is a great thing that DUSON appreciates diversity because some schools only care about numbers (letter and grades only), so I appreciate them. I don't know what I would have done if I have missed the deadline. This is one school I feel I actually have a decent shot at, but you never know so I guess I will wait and try no to obsesses and if it does not happen this time, then there are other semester like you said.

Aspire2Inspire- are you NC or out of state?

Amisadai - what age thing do you mean? I got my application in back in october (not my usual style to do things so ahead of time- but I am blessed with an OCD husband who was bugging me every day until I got it in. At least its good to know that he is just as excited about the program as I am). Anyway I feel like I have already been waiting for a while so I am thrilled that the due date has arrived and that we'll hear something soon.

aspire--- i am bls certified but it will only carry my through october 2011 so ill be taking the class again over the summer too. did you apply for fall entry? your post says spring but it may just be a typo.

i applied to vcu, georgetown and george mason as well. im from virginia so in state tuition would be nice and georgetown has a program where you can get 80% of your tuition covered but i really want to go to duke. i just figure i will work 150% to be a star student if im accepted and maybe hope to get a job there to get the tuition repayment :) from everything ive researched it seems like the best school for me and it would be worth it. plus im dying to get out of va, ive lived in the same place my entire life (other than when in college).

@eveamber- I am referring to my constant obsession with my age. Although I am fairly young, I dislike the fact that I wasted time in undergrad when I could've graduate from nursing the first round. That's what I am referring.

@murph1009- That tuition thing from Georgetown sounds pretty nice!

Just a general question, where everybody get the undergrad from?

Amisadai - I am right there with you! I *thought* that's what you meant, but I didn't want to say so if I wasn't sure. I am the same way. I loved undergrad (I went to University of California Santa Cruz - BA in history - and had a wonderful experience there) and I absolutely loved living in Peru for a few years after I graduated - so I dont regret doing any of those things, but at the same time I feel like I am getting on in years now, and it's crunch time. :)

Aspire - I'm pretty sure I'm BLS certified. I have CPR for health professionals. I am not sure what the names are for certifications outside of California. Mine will expire in May, so I'll have to recert by then. That might make me a little shy of being covered through the program, but I don't mind taking the class again if I have to.

You all are making me feel really old. I've taken a very circuitous path in life and most times, don't mind it. I like the fact that I have done lots of things. But then I hear about people who have been in nursing for 20 years and I think, hmm, maybe if I had figured it all out a little sooner that could be me. But there is nothing I can do about it now and at least I am glad to find things that I have enjoyed.

evaamber - to answer your question from a while back, I mainly observed in hospitals and clinics in Ecuador. Helped out with a few things, but because my clinical skills are limited, I didn't want to do too much. But still loved it.

I did my undergrad at Evergreen State in WA and loved it. I'm applying to Emory and Samuel Merritt, but Duke is probably my first choice. Probably because it definitely is from all that I have read, but I have yet to visit. Hopefully will get that opportunity in January!

Hi all,

Is anyone else going a little crazy with the waiting? I applied early so the wait has been a little longer, but somehow the deadline made it all that more intense. So glad this thread was started. Checking the online application doesn't do much right now, but it is nice to have a some company in the wait.

I only applied to Duke for a variety of reasons, but for those of you who don't live here, you have picked a great place. The campus is more beautiful than you can imagine and Durham is an awesome place to live.

There has been tons of money poured into revitalization over the past five years and as a result there are great restaraunts, beautiful parks, broadway shows and baseball. All with an affordable living cost and still small enough to feel like you are part of a community.

Hopefully we will be meeting up soon and you can see some of our great little city.
