What do you do on your unit? How's it working out for your preemies?

Do you have a soda can bottle depot in your area? Staff members here put their cans into a bin and a staff member takes it to the bottle depot which gives us 10 cents a piece for them. you'd be surprised how much we collect in just a couple of months. We use the money to buy fabric that we find on sale, for isolette covers etc.

We cover the Isolettes always and keep the lights down low as much as possible...and then we try to have a quiet hour once a shift.

Check with local service agencies(girlscouts etc.) as well as quilters clubs, hospital auxiliary about donating quilts for the babies. We have several local organizations that donate for our NICU. Sometimes to the point of having too many. We let the families take the quilts home when the baby is discharged . :)

For a while, we had a soda machine in our lounge--any money we made from the sale of the sodas went toward stuff like that. Food Service realized we were making a profit, that was the end of that.

the NICU at a local hospital has retavated and their lighting is very suddely and is an add attraction to most that walk by they have virtually no normal lights and the lighting is little blinking blubs that they call the starry night and the incubator have no lights in them they are just the tempeture controlled ones. When I first interened at the new NICU i was amazed at this new way of lighting it also gives a feeling of comfort I love their lighting does anyone have similar lighting or a unique form of lighting in their NICU? :balloons:
