Specializes in ER.

I am currently in my 2nd semester of school to become an RN and I am thinking of entering the health care field now on a part time basis before I graduate in some way but not sure what exactly I should be looking for in employemtn and what I can apply for. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Specializes in Step down, ICU, ER, PACU, Amb. Surg.

Most nursing students that I ever worked with were CNAs. That might not be a bad place to start. Good luck with what every you do.

I agree, being a CNA is a great place to start out, and it gives a nurse great insite as to their jobs. One thing I've found over the years is that nurses who had been CNAs before they got their license are more apt to work as a team. There's nothing more agravating than a nurse who feels certain duties are "beneath her"

In a very short time, i will be graduating as a Nurse... I want to practice my profession in a big hospital somewhere in New York... Any suggestion will be acknowledge...

there have job fairs coming soon ....sorry I do not have a date or location for you but if your in ny your school usually tells you when the job fair is coming contact a nursing school in nyc and ask the to share the date of an upcoming job fair.

also a lot of hospitals offer interships especially in the summer again the clinical instructor at your school could tell you about which one has them.they pay you and train you ...........so I hope that help you ..............good luck ..........I graduate in may/04 yeah...just can not wait...............

Specializes in ICU, psych, corrections.

Go talk to your local hospitals about being a Nurse Apprentice/Externship. I just finished my 1st semester of an ADN program and was hired on at the hospital here in town. I do basically what a CNA does, as well as stock, check equipement, etc. After my 2nd semester, I can move up to an Apprentice II and will be able to perform a lot more patient care than I do now. But it pays really well (I will be bringing home around $1200 a month for 20 hours per week) and I'm learning a lot from the ICU nurses. The girl who works with me is a CNA and has worked for the hospital for the past 8 years. She is what they call a Critical Care Tech and that's the title they give the Nurse Apprentices. I am welcome to work there for as long as I want (obviously, I am hoping to eventually be employed as an RN there). It's a great job to have through school because it pays well and I'm learning at the same time.

For career expo dates, go to http://www.advancefornurses.com/ Theyre holding one at Madison Square Garden in February or March.

also try http://www.NursingSpectrum.com They are having a career expo coming up in NJ.

Theyre also holding a special seminar in Tarrytown in February specifically for student nurses from all over the state. Lots of info, recruiters, job opportunities, and educational sessions just for student nurses! Check it out: http://events.nursingspectrum.com/event.cfm

Whenever you go to these events, dress as you would for a job interview (cause you might just get one right then & there) & bring copies of your resume with you to leave with the recruiters.

PS

Nursing students would benefit from working as nurses aides (pcas, cnas) while in nursing school. They get lots of practical experience and suffer less reality shock. AND their union helps pay their nursing school tuition.

hi,

i was just wondering what requirement are needed to start working as a nurse apprentice?

Specializes in Geriatrics, Hospice, Disease Management.

I've been working as a CNA for almost 4 years now (since my senior year in highschool) and I must say I LOVE the experience I get. I hate the fact that everyone at work treats me as a baby and asks me why am I going into nursing all this other bull but you just brush it off and continue on..I start the Nursing BSN program at the end of this month :) and am planning on working 16hrs a week now rather than my usual 24 while doing prereqs
