SUNY To Close Long Island College Hospital

Board members of the State University of New York voted this morning to shut down Long Island College Hospital. Once paperwork is filed and so forth it will be up to NYS dept of health officials to either approve or reject the closure but most experts agree the thing is a done deal.

NYS/NYC residents or anyone else interested can "Google' LICH for more information. Not much in evening news as they are preoccupied with the "Blizzard".

they (the state) has done this many times. They are not going to allow the hospital to close. There is no hospital beside BKLYN and Methodist nearby- def not enuff space to serve the population.

From what one has been reading and hearing Long Island College Hospital has been a hot mess for years now. It has been losing money in each of the past seventeen years and was raped, pillaged and looted by Continuum Partners who turned sold what was left to SUNY Downstate. In hindsight many are now questioning that decision as it seems like throwing good money after bad.

The only service at LICH that has any where near full census are the psych beds according to reports. Even there the bulk of those patients are Medicare/Medicaid. In short it is the "Saint Vinny's" problem all over again; despite the rising wealth of the Cobble Hill area local residents do not use LICH. Instead they prefer to go to Long Island or Manhattan for care.

It is very hard times for local community hospitals with just last week NYP taking over Beekman Downtown Hospital (another place local residents don't use), and there are probably going to be more closures down the road.

As with Saint Vinny's, LICH can close as a full service hospital and some sort of urgent and or ambulatory care center opened to take it's place.

Thing about LICH is the land is already zoned for residential building, so any developer could tear down the place and build housing without having to seek a variance or such approval from the City. Indeed the current zoning does not permit a building of LICH's size, so whatever when up in it's place (assuming the Hick's Street campus was sold) would have to be smaller.

Had no idea Mount Sinai is going to open medical practice building in the area joining what seems to be a growing number including a large peds practice. Well now we know where all those well heeled Cobble Hill/Brooklyn Heights/ Goworifice residents are going.

Bet you are glad now for not taking the FT position.

Though it could be months or longer before or if LICH does close, you can bet many nurses aren't letting grass grow under their feet. It would be great if Mount Sinai or NYP took over the place even if they worked out some sort of urgent care along with other needed services arrangement in lieu of a FS hospital; however that would still mean less need for nurses.

I don't understand how SUNY can get away with this, what is going on over there? Are you guys going to be paid after this weekend?
