SUNY-Downstate & Pre-reqs

U.S.A. New York

Hi everyone,

I'm a second degree student currently finishing up my pre-reqs. I'm applying to SUNY-Downstate for their accelerated program that starts June 2006. Do you have to finish all of your pre-reqs before you put in your application? I've heard "rumors" that b/c it's so competitive, they don't really look at the applications of students that haven't completed their pre-reqs. I want to plan accordingly - thanks so much for your help!

Hey I'm applying to their accel prgm too and I'm scheduled to take the NET this Sunday. I've been studying but still feel so unprepared! not to mention, the app is due on Feb 1 and I still haven't completed it yet. It's just a matter of puttin everything together now b/c at least I have all my recs and prereqs, but time is ticking!!!!!

Was anyone's essay for Downstate really only 250 words??? That seems sooo short!

I applied to the SUNY downstate program too. I kept my essay to 250 words but it was very difficult. I felt Like I couldnt say much at all. :(

Has anyone herad if they got in yet? I talked to someone in admissions and he said they made admissions decisions for the accelerated program starting June 2008 on Jan 28. I called this AM to see if they had sent letters out yet but couldnt get an answer. Big surprise haha.

I dont think I will get in as my undergrad gpa wasnt great although I have other good experience.

I called this week and had a friend call the very next day to ask for an approximate date when the decisions would be communicated. In both instances the answer was "I can't remember. Be patient!"

The person on the other end of the phone was even unable to tell me if decisions would be ready in April or in March. Does anyone from last year recall when the letters were received?

Thanks

I've been looking over some old threads, and it looks like it's taken Downstate roughly 1.5-2 months to get letters out to people in the past. My best guess is that they'll go out on 3/15 at the absolute earliest.

Then again, if admissions is this ridiculous, you have to question what the rest of the program is like. Stony Brook or Queens is starting to sound better.

I am a 2005 graduate of the Downstate program and I have good news and bad news.

Bad news first, yes- Downstate is a bit disorganized to put it nicely and you won't know about your admissions or where you go to clinicals etc sometimes until like 2 days before.

HOWEVER

As a soon to be graduate from a "brand namey" Masters program in New Haven :yeah::yeah: I will

say- it didn't get much better and meeting other people from a variety of nursing schools along the way they all say the same thing-- it is nursing school, period, MANY MANY of them are not that organized so I advised in fact implore you to be patient with the situation because I did get an awesome nursing education from downstate and didn't get notified until the END of May for a June 1 start so if you can wait e.g. you don't have to notify someone else,I would. The price is right and you get what you need. Clinicals at Kings County hospital . .. .yeah- you learn! And once you're in. .. .you'll know who to ask for what an things will go much smoother.

Good luck to all

end of May?!?!!?? geeze!!! well I guess we'll all have to be patient. thx for the advice! and congrats on your soon to be Masters!!! woo hooo! :)

Yeah, I totally agree with Pride of July28, admissions at SUNY Downstate does seem to be quite disorganized. I finally received an acceptance letter after being on the alternate list since early March. Although I did the NET, they have it marked as uncompleted online on my admissions checklist. They could never give you a straight answer, but I am finally glad that I can stop stressing about being on the alternate list. Has anyone else been on the alternate list, or accepted, or on the alternate list and then accepted?
