Refresher Course

I everyone I have a question. Do you need a refresher course for a Job? I went to an interview and they told me I need a refresher course before they can hire me. Because I've been out if school for 5years. And they told me that is their hospital policy. Do u need refresher course for all hospitals. Any help from anyone would be helpful.

I have been a nurse 18 years, never left nursing.... I left the hosptial setting in 2008, and continued to do pediatric homecare and school nursing. I applied for jobs in the hospital setting recently, and I was told to take a nurse refresher. Imagine my surprise! I have always been a practicing nurse. I did not take the nurse refresher and luckily , was hired recently for a NICU PICU float position. But it wasn't easy. Ad that's my experience as an RN with 18 years experience. You may eventually have to take that nurse refresher class. I was planning on it, since I wasn't getting hired.

I can't afford refresher course right now. I pray to God to get on without refresher course.

Hello Kemifair, I recently have been face with the same problem you have encounter. No one wants to hire me due to the fact that I never worked in my field since graduating 6 yrs ago. Not knowing what to do I decided to search the web and found this site. I though I was alone in my frustration but I'm not. If possible can you please give me so info at to what you did, whether or not you took the refresher course and where. Thank Taylor77

I graduated 2 years ago and haven't worked. Do you think I should take a refresher as well? Also live in near NYC area

Anyone have updated info on this.. I would like to take one also and have been looking for days.. Only find places adelphi and molloy and they are too far.. I live in staten island..I have been out of school since December 2013. I was in an accelerated RN program and feel like i legitimately do not remember anything because the program was so quick and intense. Also I feel my clinical experience was less than should have been and would really like to brush up on my skills.

Don't go into a refresher course thinking that it will make you on par in the job market as a new grad/license RN - all things being equal with no work experience.

Can it help? Yes. Is it required by some hospitals? Yes. Will you get a hospital job in NYC with one with no experience? The odds are not in your favor but it can help with nursing homes and home care nursing.

I took the refresher course at Adelphi in 2014. Did clinicals at Winthrop Hospital. The hospital I was hired at didn't even want to look or verify the certificate from there. But I did talk about it with the nursing manager.

I am the only one in my refresher course group with a hospital job. I have asked around with other groups and it's equally as bad for them. The best thing about refresher is probably going to be the relationships you can form in your clinical unit. Can't be shy or lazy. Have to reach out to as many people as possible.

I just called Medgar Evers and they said there was NO refresher course offered.
