Please Help Desperate RN!!!

U.S.A. New York

Hi all,

I am new to allnurses, I hope to find helpful info on this forum..Thanks for having me.

Has anyone taken the pre employment pharmacology exam at Montefiore Medical Center? I am in desperate need of a review, I have been out of school since Dec 2009, took my state board in March of 2010 and I have yet to find an RN position. I am just so stressed right now that I cant even put it in words. If anyone knows of any facilities that are hiring new grad associate degree RNs please let me know.

Also I used to work at Montefiore and before I left I took their RN pharmacology exam and passed it in April of 2011 but there were no positions available so in May I left them for an RN position at AHRC NYC. Due to budget cuts I was unable to stay at AHRC NYC and I had already resigned from Montefiore so now Im left with no job and unable to get unemployment because I resigned.

about a month after working at AHRC NYC Montefiore called me back about a position they wanted to offer me and the HR recruiter told me that I didnt have to take the exam over because I had already taken it. When I show up to meet with the HR recruiter she says that I have to retake the exam because I am a rehire, this is crazy. Is there anything that I can do about this situation. I feel like the HR recruiter set me up for failure because why did I have to take the test again if I passed it in April and it was still in my file.

Someone please help and give me some guidance, If you guys know anywhere that is hiring I would appreciate the info as well as a pharm review course to brush up on my medication administration skills so when I have to take another test I'll pass it.

Sincerely,

Lost and confused, RN

Cannot speak to your specific situation, but did do some *asking around* and folks say that all applicants for nursing positions must take Montefiore's exam. (period).

If you took the exam and passed already then you know what to expect and should pass again. OTHO you *could* gently remind HR that you took and passed the exam just about three months ago.

Being as all that may, if the only thing (or only one of the few things) standing between you and this position is the pharma exam, take the exam again.:D Nursing gigs in NYC aren't that easy to find, and they contacted you that is always a good sign.

Knock em dead! (not for real of course).

Hi DoGoodThenGo

I took the exam again and failed it, now I have to wait 6 months to take it again, I do very well with calculations but the med administration part I suck...So now I cant be considered for a position there until I retake it in January and pass..

Once you start passing out Medications more it will just be stuck in your head. I started my career in a nursing home and had to pass out so many medications that eventually it stuck with me, once I got into Med/Surg it was all go from there. Every single time you pass a medication and don't know it look it up. Can't find it the Pharmacist is your friend. It always help.

Maybe some students will chime in on some books you can buy or even something you can do in the library. I find reading journals such as Advance or even the journal my state sends me can help me out too. Lastly, CEUs about medications can help you along as well. Not sure how many you need to keep up with in NY.

You will always have to take some kind of test no matter where you are going to work. Some places have you do them independently and some do not.

OIC, am sorry to hear that.

Thinking positive you took the exam and passed once, so you can do it again. Knuckle down and study the areas you did poorly in on the last attempt and you should pass next year.

As others have stated there isn't a facilily in NYC that doesn't require a math/pharma exam for new hires. Some won't even give out an application until one has passed said exam.

Doing some research found Montefiore designed and began implementing their exam back in 2002 in response to what was seen as very high numbers of med errors.

Has anyone taken the Pharm/Drug Calculations test at Montefiore? If so what type of medication questions are on it? Basic stuff that I'll remember or should I go back and re-read/re-learn my pharm books? And did they let you use a calculator

I have been looking for a job for more than a year now finally montefiore calledfor an interview but I must pass the drug calculation exam. Is there anyone that know if they let you a calculator and whAt kind of question that on the test. Any info will be greatly appreciate.

Hi,

I saw that back in Nov. you took the Montefiore pharm exam. I was wondering how it went. I have to take it early next month and was wondering if you could tell me anything about it. Any pointers?

Thanks!

hii Ms. Labelle any updates?? i have been trying here myself

I actually just took this exam less than 2 weeks ago. It's easy. It is divided in two parts: math calculation and medication administration policies. I think each section had 15 questions. It was easy. I got one wrong, not because I didn't know the answer, it was because I pressed the wrong button.

any other pointer on this exam I have to take next week

Hey! I am taking the exam this upcoming week for an ED spot. What questions are in the pharm and math part? Like what types of meds and math formulas/calculations should I expect?
